Scripture Reading

John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Love can be known only from the actions that it prompts. God’s love is seen in the gift of His Son. God has given his son that He should be believed upon. That is to be entrusted or commited to. The love of God, in the Son has been given that it may be entrusted or commited to. This belief is more that a mystical assumption, a personal feeling or a factual adherence. Just as the love of God has been made known by its actions, so also is a mans true belief in the work of Christ made known by his action.
1 John 4:9–10 ESV
In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
John 3:1:
Jesus is the perfect expression of love.
Ephesians 2:4 ESV
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us,
2 Corinthians 5:14 ESV
For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died;
Galatians 5:22 ESV
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Going back to , here is what we see,
CONTEXT:
Jesus is speaking with a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus.
Nicodemus comes to Jesus by night wondering how to know that Jesus is from God.
Jesus tells Nicodemus that he cannot know this unless he is born again...
“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Jesus is that Kingdom…(Repent the kingdom of heaven is at hand)
Nicodemus ask...”How can these things be”
Jesus answers:
John 3:10–21 ESV
Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
Two Words In John 3:16:
Love - God’s action towards man, seen in the giving of His only Son.
Belief -
An ongoing condition of the heart. Not believed but believes. This is an ongoing continuous action. It can be dangerous to link a past decision with wether or not you are a Christian. The question is, are you believing (current, present tense) that Jesus Christ is the Son of God? Is this the ongoing condition of your heart?
Believing includes
a mental agreement. That is, believing is not merely a subjective or emotional thing. There is a truth content and you have to answer if you believe it or not. In other words the message of Christ flies in the face of the relativism of our day that says, “it’s true for me but it may not be true for you.”
a satisfaction with all that God is for you in Christ. Knowing and agreeing with truth is necessary, but it is not that alone which makes true belief. That alone is no different than the faith of devils () Believing means being satisfied with what God is for you in Jesus.
Believing is coming to Christ, knowing Him as true and that truth (being Christ) is satisfying to the deepest longings of the soul.

John 3:
What will become of those who know God as true, who trust in who Christ is and continually desire Him and to have their satisfaction in Him? The answer is all who desire God as such, who search for Him as such a treasure, will because of the love of God, find that life, love and satisfaction in God.
John 6:35 ESV
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
