Pointing at the Jews
Romans 2:17–18 NASB95
17 But if you bear the name “Jew” and rely upon the Law and boast in God, 18 and know His will and approve the things that are essential, being instructed out of the Law,
But if you bear the name “Jew” and rely upon the Law and boast in God,
and know His will and approve the things that are essential, being instructed out of the Law.
Notice what is take place here.
The Jews are boasting.
The way one looks at himself and an objective evaluation can be quite different.
In this passage the Jew’s opinion of themselves is presented along with an objective evaluation by the Spirit of God. The conclusion is startling to the Jew who rested in the Law and his position as privileged before God.
Later the passages even attack his very identity with God through circumcision.
The Jews boasted in 4 things.
1. His name- Jew
2. His Law- to the Jew it was the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth.
Romans 2:20 NASB95
20 a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of the immature, having in the Law the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth,
3. His God- always “The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
4. His Privileges- to “know His will, and approve the things that are essential.
Romans 2:18 NASB95
18 and know His will and approve the things that are essential, being instructed out of the Law,
Romans 2:28 NASB95
28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh.
Romans 2: 28
Now the next couple of verse have the way the Jews think of themselves.
Romans 2:19–20 NASB95
19 and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, 20 a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of the immature, having in the Law the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth,
and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness,
corrector of the foolish, a teacher of the immature, having in the Law the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth,
The word confident here is the word peitho meaning convinced
You are convinced....
This verb is in the perfect tense which indicates he was perfectly, thoroughly convinced of these things about himself. No room for doubt.
This verb is in the perfect tense which indicates he was perfectly, thoroughly convinced of these things about himself. No room for doubt.
This verb is in the perfect tense which indicates he was perfectly, thoroughly convinced of these things about himself. No room for doubt.
God’s gift to the world.
Four things they where convinced about themselves.
1. A guide to the blind
2. A light to those in darkness
3. A corrector of the foolish
4. A teacher of the immature.
Those without the Law were looked upon as bind, in darkness, foolish, and immature.
They who had the Law were guides, lights, corrector of all other, and teachers.
So now Paul give God’s opinion of the Jews
Romans 2:21–24 NASB95
21 you, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that one shall not steal, do you steal? 22 You who say that one should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 23 You who boast in the Law, through your breaking the Law, do you dishonor God? 24 For “the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,” just as it is written.
you, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that one shall not steal, do you steal?
Paul asked 5 revealing question for the teacher of the Law.
You who say that one should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?
You who boast in the Law, through your breaking the Law, do you dishonor God?
For “THE NAME OF GOD IS BLASPHEMED AMONG THE GENTILES BECAUSE OF YOU,” just as it is written.
Paul asked 5 revealing question for the teacher of the Law.
1. Do you teach yourself?
2. Do you steal?
3. Do you commit adultery?
4. Do you rob temples? (Pay your tithe)
5. Do you dishonor God?
The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentile because of You!!!! Wow Verse 24
LETS STOP RIGHT AND ASK THIS QUESTION OF OURSELVE
The Name of God was in reproach among the gentile because of the sin of the Jew. They presented themselves as instructor of the Law did not keep it themselves.
Now look at verse 25-28
Romans 2:25–28 NASB95
25 For indeed circumcision is of value if you practice the Law; but if you are a transgressor of the Law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. 26 So if the uncircumcised man keeps the requirements of the Law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? 27 And he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the Law, will he not judge you who though having the letter of the Law and circumcision are a transgressor of the Law? 28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh.
For indeed circumcision is of value if you practice the Law; but if you are a transgressor of the Law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.
For indeed circumcision is of value if you practice the Law; but if you are a transgressor of the Law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.
So if the uncircumcised man keeps the requirements of the Law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision?
And he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the Law, will he not judge you who though having the letter of the Law and circumcision are a transgressor of the Law?
For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh.
Now he talkS about Circumcision the seal of God in the flesh. And that it is mollified by their lawlessness.
1. Circumcision is of value for the Jew if he practice the law verse 25
2. If the Jew is A transgressor of the Law, his circumcision becomes uncircumcision. Verse 25
3. The uncircumcised who keep the Law will judge the circumcised who are transgressors verse 27.
So what does this mean?
1. God is looking for “circumcision of the heart, by the spirit, not the letter.”
Romans 2:25 NASB95
25 For indeed circumcision is of value if you practice the Law; but if you are a transgressor of the Law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.
Romans 2:29 NASB95
29 But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.
Romans 2:29 NASB95
29 But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.
But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.
2. God accepts one’s Jewishness not merely on the basis of “circumcision which is outward in the flesh, but he us a Jew who is one inwardly.” (verse 28-29)
3. The Jew had the symbol, but had lost the reality of it.
Stephen says this is
Acts 7:51 NASB95
51 “You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did.
“You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did.
“You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did.
Question
Who are the Jews????
One who is not only has the seal of Abraham (Circumcision,) but also has the faith of Abraham which circumcised in the heart.
What is the Seal?
The real Jew does not live by the letter of the Law, he receives the work of the Spirit by faith of Abraham.
The real Jew does not live by the letter of the Law, he receives the work of the Spirit by faith of Abraham.
The verdict of Jesus came as a striking condemnation,
John 8:44 NASB95
44 “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
(IF YOU DONT MAKE IT THIS FAR THST OKAY )

Introduction to chapter 3
Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision?
Romans 3:1–4 NASB95
1 Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? 2 Great in every respect. First of all, that they were entrusted with the oracles of God. 3 What then? If some did not believe, their unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it? 4 May it never be! Rather, let God be found true, though every man be found a liar, as it is written, That You may be justified in Your words, And prevail when You are judged.”

The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? (I am speaking in human terms.) 6 May it never be! For otherwise, how will God judge the world? 7 But if through my lie the truth of God abounded to His glory, why am I also still being judged as a sinner? 8 And why not say (as we are slanderously reported and as some claim that we say), “Let us do evil that good may come”? Their condemnation is just. 9 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin;

May it never be! Rather, let God be found true, though every man be found a liar, as it is written,
“THAT YOU MAY BE JUSTIFIED IN YOUR WORDS,
AND PREVAIL WHEN YOU ARE JUDGED.”
But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? ( I am speaking in human terms.)
May it never be! For otherwise, how will God judge the world?
But if through my lie the truth of God abounded to His glory, why am I also still being judged as a sinner?
And why not say (as we are slanderously reported and as some claim that we say), “ Let us do evil that good may come”? Their condemnation is just.
What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin
1. Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision?
Answer there is an advantage because you have received the oracles of God. (The old testament) you should have an advantage
2. What then? If some did not believe, their unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it? Answer, the unbelief of man will not change the Word of God. ! Rather, let God be found true, though every man be found a liar
3. But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? Answer May it never be!
4. But if through my lie the truth of God abounded to His glory, why am I also still being judged as a sinner? Man would use his logic to escape the judgment of God. Some would say “let us do evil that good may come.” Verse 8. But notice what Paul says “Their condemnation is Just.
5. What then? Are we better than they? Are the Jews better than the Gentiles? NO!!! all is under sin Verse 9
