When Martin Luther nailed his 95 thesis to the door of the castle church in Wittenberg, it is generally believed that it was not his intent to start a major conflict with the Church. As a scholar who held an advanced theology degree, he was in a position to initiate debate over Biblical and/or extra-biblical issues. He posted, as many of us might today, in a public place, things he was either very upset about, had a true opposition to or simply wanted answers for.
