How do we pray?

What is Prayer?
Who hears our Prayers?
Are prayers effective?
Matthew 6:5–15 ESV
“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Jesus says when you pray
Prayer is:
Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament based on Semantic Domains 33.178 εὔχομαι; προσεύχομαι; εὐχή, ῆς; προσευχή, ῆς

to speak to or to make requests of God—‘to pray, to speak to God, to ask God for, prayer

Jesus teaches us that we can come to God
This all sufficient, creator of everything, all powerful God allows us to talk to Him
and not just come to Him but we can make requests
It is the same God who spoke this world into existence is the God that we come to with our prayer and requests
what can we bring to this awesome God?
Psalm 34:17–18 ESV
When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
If we are stuck and in need of help no matter what we face God hears our cries
What Kind of God to we come to?
one who is near us when we are brokenhearted
and when we are crushed, He saves us
Isaiah 61:1–4 ESV
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified. They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.
this is the God that we come to and make our request.
one who binds our broken hearts
one who takes our mourning and our sadness and our discouragement
and gives us Joy and gladness
This is the God who hears our cries and request
A God who is ever present
Psalm 46:1–2 ESV
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
Our help in times of Trouble
Romans 8:26 ESV
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
God has given us His spirit
Jesus call the spirit the Helper
John 15:26 ESV
“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.
John 16:13 ESV
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
The Spirit guides us

The Spirit helps (pres. tense, “keeps on helping”) us in (the Gr. here does not have the words rendered “us in”) our weakness. It is not that the Spirit helps in those occasional times when Christians are weak; their state is one of weakness and the Spirit continually helps them.

What is Christian weakness?

The Greek word for weakness (astheneia) may include physical, emotional, and spiritual disability

God helps us in our weakness
His spirit Guides us
and we can come to God
James 5:14 ESV
Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
Sick-

pertaining to being ill and, as a result, weak and incapacitated—‘sick, ill, weak, disabled

Weak

The word asthenei literally means “to be weak.”

sick person, literally means “to be weary.”

We can come to God in our weakness

Luke 18:9–14 ESV
He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Christ says “ don”t be like the hypocrites”

one who pretends to be other than he really is

verse 8- God knows our needs even before we speak them.”
God wants us to come to Him
Even to the point that He made the way for us to come
Matthew 27:51 ESV
And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
What separated us from God Christ took out of the way
Hebrews 10:19–22 ESV
Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
