Subject: Stormy Weathery
Text:
35 And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. 36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. 37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. 38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? 39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
INTRODUCTION
There was a song by the same title by the late great blues singer Etta James
(cant understand Lil Wayne)
“Don’t know why there’s no son up in the sky stormy weather, since my man and I anit together. Keeps raining all the time.
Life is bare gloom and misery everywhere stormy weather. And I just cant get my poor self together, stormy weather. Its clear in her song her storm is because her man left her, it was relationship storm.
Most of us know relationship storms are not the only storms that rise up in our lives.
· Health storms rise up – bad news from Dr.
· Financial storms rise up – bill collectors
· Parenting storms rise up- trying do best
· Spiritual storms rise up just cant fill the presence of God
It don’t matter what storm your going through, when storms come we want one thing. We it to stop. We want
· Winds to stop blowling,
· rain to stop pouring,
· a little light to shine through the darkness.
That’s all the disciples wanted, they just wanted the storm to stop. When the storm didn’t stop they thought they were going to die.
STORMY WEATHER
STORY
Jesus had been teaching all day long, and round about evening time, Jesus decided he had been teaching enough and he told his disciples, to prepare the boat, they were going to the other side of the sea of Galilee. They were going to leave Capernaum going east to Garasenes.
They get in the boat, disciples do there boat thing, Jesus goes to the back of the boat, falls asleep. Even with Jesus sleeping everything starts out ok.
It started as I woiuld have expected it should.
The disciples were accomplished fishermen.
· They knew there way around a boat.
· They knew there way around the sea of Galilee
Everything was going fine, Jesus was sleeping, the disciples were cruising, when all a sudden they ran into stormy weather.
The bible says There arose a great storm of wind and the waves beat into the ship so that it was now full full.
Now this was not the first time the disciples encountered a storm on the sea of Galilee.
· They were fishermen.
· They made there living on the sea of Galilee.
· The sea of Galilee was know for stormy weather.
· One minute the sun is shinning the next minute your in a storm. That was the sea of Galilee. Kinda like lake Erie, one minute your fighting perch and walleye and the next minute your fight a storm.
But the gospel writer Mark wants us to know this morning, this was no ordinary storm.
Although storms were common on the sea of Galilee, this was an uncommon storm. Mark says this was a great storm,
· It was greater in size,
· greater in form,
· greater in force
· greater in intensity than any storm they had encountered on the sea of Galilee.
It terrified them, it did not just scare them but it terrified them.
· The disciple paniced.
· They believed they were going to die.
· These seasoned fisherman were terrified, so much so the bible says they woke Jesus up, said to him Master don’t you care that we are about die. We are about drown and you are sleeping.
I need to pause here.
Don’t be too hard on the disciple. Don’t start criticizing the disciples about what they said.
· What’s wrong those men
· How could they accuse Jesus of not caring
· Don’t they know who they have on board with them
· They ought to be ashamed of thereselves
Some of you are already criticizing, But the rest of us, all we can is “Been There – Done That”
· Jesus don’t you care that my child is sick?
· Jesus you care that my marriage is falling apart?
· Jesus, don’t you care that my friends have deserted me?L
· Jesus, don’t you care that I have no money?
· Jesus, don’t you care that I feel so alone?
· Jesus don’t you care my health is failing
· Jesus, don’t you care that I want to give up?
· Jesus don’t you care that my loved one has died?
· Jesus don’t you care that I lost my job
· JESUS DON’T YOU CARE
· ANYBODY BEEN THERE
Perhaps you have not had to endure stormy weather, perhaps you’ve endured a storm, but not a megas storm. If you have not, just store what I’m telling you, on your mental hard drive,
sooner or later a great storm will come.
KEY BIBLICAL TRUTH
Can I talk to somebody whose going through stormy weather, not just any storm, but a great storm.
· Your just barely making
· Your barely got your head above water
· Hope is on its last leg
· It seems like the more water you bail out, the more water get poured in
· Your sinking and all you can do is CRY OUT, JESUS DON’T YOU CARE.
I just stop this morning on my way to glory to let you YES, GOD CARES
The song said “So you think you cant make it through, and you feel like all your hope is gone, just remember God cares for you.
Even in the midst of our storms God continually calls us to come to Him with our burdens and find rest for our souls. Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
God invites us to cast our worries and our cares on him. reminds us to: Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
Jesus reminds us in Matthew chapter 6 that we mean something to God. He clothes the lilies of the field, feeds the little sparrows, we are worth more to God than the Lillie and the sparrow. YES GOD CARES
Talking about stormy weather.
IDENTIFICATION OF A COMMON PROBLEM
In the bible storms are often a pictures of adversity or hardship that can come into our lives.
And when storm comes, there are times we want them to go away, so we pray to God to remove the storm. And there are times when God removes the storm and there are times when God will strengthen us through the storm.
There many several types of literal storms.
· Thunderstorms, hail storms, snow storms, tornado, huricans blizzards
There are also different types of figurative storms
I’ve found out there are three types of spiritual storms
THERE ARE CORRECTING STORMS
Sometimes storms come as a result of our own disobedience.
The purpose of correcting storms is to correct us and and get us on the right path. Jonah’s storm was a correcting storm. God told Jonah to go and preach down in Ninevah. But Jonah didn’t want to go to Nineveh. So he disobeyed God’s instructions. Instead of Jonah going to Nievah like God said, Jonah headed to Tarshich.
But sent God a storm, You know the story, because of the storm Jonah was kicked off the ship, thrown overboard and then swalled by a big fish.
The purpose of this storm was to get Jonah’s attention and put Jonah back on the right on track.
Is your stormy weather a correcting storm. Is God trying to get your attention. Protecting storms will continue to rage in your life until God gets your attention.
THERE ARE PROTECTING SOTRMS
Protecting storms are designed to protect us from something far worse than the storm.
You remember when Jesus feed 5000 men not counting women and children with a childs lunch of a few slices of bread and a few fish. The bible said that he feed the crowd until they were full and still had some left over. And the people right then and there wanted to make Jesus their Messiah. But you cant make Jesus something that he already is. They wanted to make Jesus their Messiah for wrong reason. And Jesus quickly gathered his disciples told them to get into the boat and meet him on otherside. As disciples were making there way to the other side, They got caught in stormy weather. Jesus had to get the disciples away from crowd, he didn’t want them to be influenced by the crowd.
Jesus understands there are some folk who are not fully committed to him yet.
· They sing in the choir but not fully committed
· Serve on the deacon board but not fully committed
· On the usher board but not fully committed
· Stand behind the pulpit, not fully committed
· Sit in the pews but fully committed.
They can easily be influenced by the world, so God sends stormy weather to keep them praying, keep them coming back to him to.
· Sometimes God sends financial storms – he keeps them broke, because if they had a little bit money, there not committed enough to pay tithes with it, but if they a little bit money left after paying bills, they would be in the clubs influenced by the world.
You might be going through stormy weather right now,
o mad at God right now
o upset with God, right now
o questioning God right now
o but that storm might be the only thing keeping in the hands of God.
CONCLUSION
THEN THEY ARE PERFECTING STORMS
Perfecting storms are those storms that help us to grow. The disciples didn’t know yet but that terrible storm was a vehicle for teaching them something the Lord and the power and his power in their lives. The storm was essential for their spiritual growth.
If the disciples in our text had never experienced stormy weather, they knew he was a great teacher, they called him Master, not because they had committed themselves to him, but because they wanted to be his students. because of the storm they found out Jesus was not only a great teacher but he had great power.
The storm was essential to their spiritual development. Here we see a principle of universal and spiritual application. Without difficulties, trials, stresses, and even failures, we would never grow to be what we should become. Storms are part of the process of spiritual growth.
You know the story they wake Jesus up, tell Jesus, Jesus don’t you care that we are going to die.
Jesus wakes up, then he gets up, then he stands up, then he speakes, rebukes wind, and tells the sea Peace Be Still. to stop and the bible says immediately the winds stop blowing and the sea calmed.
