Believers
Synopsis
Those who have faith in God.
After Pentecost, the term came to be used specifically to refer to Christians, that is, to those who believe and trust in God, as he has made himself known through Jesus Christ.
The NT stresses that Jesus Christ brings the faith of OT believers to perfection and to its proper fulfilment.
Believers as those who have faith in God
(ESV) — 3 And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household.
(Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly, 4 and when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the Lord, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water.)

(ESV) — 39 Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.”
40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days.
41 And many more believed because of his word.
42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”
(ESV) — 15 And after she was baptized, and her household as well, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.”
And she prevailed upon us.
(ESV) — 1 My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory.
OT believers looked forward to the NT faith
(ESV) — 13 These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.

(ESV) — 39 And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised,
(ESV) — 10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.
12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
The church is referred to as the believers
(ESV) — 12 Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people by the hands of the apostles.
And they were all together in Solomon’s Portico.

(ESV) — 15 In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said,
(ESV) — 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common.
(ESV) — 32 Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common.
(ESV) — 41 And he gave her his hand and raised her up.
Then, calling the saints and widows, he presented her alive.
(ESV) — 12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
In the early church a distinction was sometimes made between Jewish and Gentile believers
(ESV) — 23 with the following letter: “The brothers, both the apostles and the elders, to the brothers who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, greetings.
See also ; ; ;
(ESV) — 45 And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles.
(ESV) — 1 Now the apostles and the brothers who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. 2 So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcision party criticized him, saying, 3 “You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them.”
(ESV) — 5 But some believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees rose up and said, “It is necessary to circumcise them and to order them to keep the law of Moses.”
(ESV) — 20 And when they heard it, they glorified God.
And they said to him, “You see, brother, how many thousands there are among the Jews of those who have believed.
They are all zealous for the law, 21 and they have been told about you that you teach all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or walk according to our customs.
22 What then is to be done?
They will certainly hear that you have come.
23 Do therefore what we tell you.
We have four men who are under a vow; 24 take these men and purify yourself along with them and pay their expenses, so that they may shave their heads.
Thus all will know that there is nothing in what they have been told about you, but that you yourself also live in observance of the law.
25 But as for the Gentiles who have believed, we have sent a letter with our judgment that they should abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality.”
The term believer is synonymous with Christian
(ESV) — 12 To the rest I say (I, not the Lord) that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he should not divorce her. 13 If any woman has a husband who is an unbeliever, and he consents to live with her, she should not divorce him.

A disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek.
(ESV) — 5 I say this to your shame.
Can it be that there is no one among you wise enough to settle a dispute between the brothers,
(ESV) — 22 Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers.
(ESV) — 14 Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers.
For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness?
Or what fellowship has light with darkness?
15 What accord has Christ with Belial?
Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever?
