I John 1:2-4
1 John 1:1–4 AV 1873
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (for the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) that which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

Fellowship Foundations

Stark contrast between the Lord and us

1 John 1:5 AV 1873
This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
The author begins here with something that he has heard from the Son.

Proof of Fellowship

1 John 1:6–7 AV 1873
If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Sin’s curse on fellowship

The Truth about my sin

1 John 1:8–10 AV 1873
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

it is comforting to learn that the forgiveness which is promised here is both absolutely assured (because God “is faithful”) and also is in no way contrary to His holiness (He is “just”). The word used here for “just” (dikaios) is the same one which is applied as a title to Christ in 2:1 where it is translated “the Righteous One.” Dikaios is also used of God (either the Father or the Son) in 2:29 and 3:7. Obviously God is “just” or “righteous” when He forgives the believer’s sin because of the “atoning sacrifice” which the Lord Jesus has made (see 2:2). As is already evident from 1:7, a Christian’s fellowship with God is inseparably connected with the effectiveness of the blood which Jesus shed for him.

Truth about Christ and my sin

1 John 2:1–2 AV 1873
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: and he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
Little Children=small children for whom a parent cares.
Every parent wants to protect their child from evil, that is what John wants here.
Advocate=a defense attorney who takes up the case of his client. Used in passages like:
paraklēton
John 14:16 AV 1873
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
John 14:26 AV 1873
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

John 15:26 AV 1873
But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
John 16:7 AV 1873
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
JOhn 16:7
Propitiation for our sins—payment
The sins of the whole world!!!—This verse is a direct line of defense against the doctrine of limited atonement.
