Christ’s authority is absolutely and completely exhaustive.

Matthew 28:16–20 ESV
16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew
Exusia - used 102 times in the New Testament
Authority, power, freedom of choice.
Look at the work authority for just a moment. Exusia. It could be translated permission, it is sometimes translated privileged, sometimes right, sometimes power, sometimes here authority. But I think the simplest definition is this, complete freedom of action. Complete freedom of action. ...You act independently of any other person or influence.

Authority simply means freedom of choice.

John MacArthur put it this way;

He has freedom to do exactly what He wants when He wants, how He wants with what He wants to whomever He wants.

Contextually How do we know that Jesus has all authority?

Christ’s Authority is Exhaustive.

He has authority over life and death.

John 10:18 ESV
No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”
John 10:18 ESV
No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”

His authority extends to the fallen.

That's an astounding statement: Who among men determines when they live? None of us decides when we will come into this world, and when we die, none of us has the power to say, "I'm coming back to life." But that's precisely what Jesus did, and if He did rise from the dead, then He has absolute authority over life and death.

Christ’s life wasn’t taken, it was given.

He has authority over heaven and earth.

What does this encompass?

a. It reaches the invisible realm.

Matthew 28:18 ESV
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Ephesians 6:12 ESV
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Matthew 28:16 ESV
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.
Colossians 2:15 ESV
He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
Ephesians 6:12 ESV
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
He’s got the who world in his hand - he’s go the who world in his hand
Eph 6
Colossians 2:15 ESV
He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.

b. It touches the physical realm.

Matthew 28:18 ESV
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

He has authority over you and me.

Colossians 1:18 ESV
And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.

1. Christ’s authority means he has all rights over your life.

2. Christ’s authority means your decisions and directions are his prerogative.

3. Christ’s authority means he sets your agenda.

In U.S. Navel Institute Proceedings, the magazine of the Naval Institute, Frank Koch illustrates the importance of obeying the Laws of the Lighthouse. Two battleships assigned to the training squadron had been at sea on maneuvers in heavy weather for several days. I was serving on the lead battleship and was on watch on the bridge as night fell. The visibility was poor with patchy fog, so the captain remained on the bridge keeping an eye on all activities.
Shortly after dark, the lookout on the wing reported, "Light, bearing on the starboard bow." "Is it steady or moving astern?" the captain called out. The lookout replied, "Steady, Captain," which meant we were on a dangerous collision course with that ship. The captain then called to the signalman, "Signal that ship: 'We are on a collision course, advise you change course twenty degrees.'" Back came the signal, "Advisable for you to change course twenty degrees." The captain said, "Send: "I'm a captain, change course twenty degrees.'" "I'm a seaman second-class," came the reply. "You had better change course twenty degrees." By that time the captain was furious. He spat out, "Send: 'I'm a battleship. Change course twenty degrees.'" Back came the flashing light, "I'm a lighthouse." We changed course.
