Jesus is the baptizer with the Holy Spirit.
John the baptist said that Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit.
We see again in the following verse that Jesus is the baptizer.
Jesus told his disciples to wait for the Promise of the Father, which is the baptism with the Holy Spirit.
We know from the Apostle Paul that all the promises of God are Yes and Amen.
Ten days after Jesus told them to wait for the promise, on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was poured out.
This fulfilled both Jesus’ words and Joel’s prophesy in the Old Testament.
After the Jewish disciples were baptized with the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, a little later in the book of Acts we are told the same blessing was given to the gentiles when Cornelius and the gentiles with him were baptized with the Holy Spirit as evidenced by speaking with other tongues.
This was quite a shock to the Jewish believers, but God was doing more than they could think or imagine.
We know that Paul expected all believers to be baptized with the Holy Spirit by this question that he asked believers at Ephesus.
We also see that the baptism of the Holy Spirit was imparted through the laying on of Paul’s hands.
Peter and John prayed for the Samaritans also like Paul had prayed for the Ephesians with the same results.
We also learn from both of these events that usually the baptism of the Holy Spirit is a later event than accepting Jesus as Savior.
Jesus said that the disciples would be given power when the Holy Spirit was given to them.
Paul said that when we pray in tongues we are speaking to God.
He also states that when we pray in tongues we edify ourselves and that he wished that all believers prayed in tongues.
Paul also said to pray with the known language and pray with tongues.
At this time I would like to address the question of why don’t all churches teach this.
Some good churches that believe the bible teach that the gifts of the spirit and praying in tongues have ceased.
They base this doctrine on the following verses.
These churches state that the phrase “that which is perfect” is fulfilled when the bible with a new testament was written.
We can show that this is not the correct understanding by reading the verses in context, which will show us that the perfect that it speaks of is the Lord Jesus himself when he comes back.
We know this is true because that is when we will see face to face as it states in verse 12.
We will not need prophesies, words of knowledge, or tongues, which only give us partial understanding because we will have full understanding while beholding Jesus.
We also know that the gifts of the spirit will not be done away with on this side of heaven based on the following scripture.
We also see that when Jesus is sending the disciples into all the Earth at the end of the Gospel of Mark He lists some of the signs that will follow all who believe in him, of which tongues and the gift of healing are mentioned.
We also know that Jesus said in three Gospels that “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away”.
