Sin Part 1

We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God.

Sin

Sin is enmity with God. It is the violation of the person and will of God. It is refusing to acknowledge the person of god, it is disobedience to the word of God, it is raising up oneself as equal to God. It is abusing the glory of God, despising the provision of God, exalting man in the place of God.

It is something that man does against and is against God.

Of all the biblical doctrines, sin is the most obvious and verifiable. Sin permeates every aspect of our existence. It impacts us individually and societally. It is deeply rooted within us and is manifested continually.

Systematic Theology 1. Sin Is a Specific Kind of Evil

It is not a calamity that came upon man unawares, poisoned his life, and ruined his happiness, but an evil course which man has deliberately chosen to follow and which carries untold misery with it. Fundamentally, it is not something passive, such as a weakness, a fault, or an imperfection, for which we cannot be held responsible, but an active opposition to God, and a positive transgression of His law, which constitutes guilt. Sin is the result of a free but evil choice of man. This is the plain teaching of the Word of God, Gen. 3:1–6; Isa. 48:8; Rom. 1:18–32; 1 John 3:4.

Three Parts to Sin

The Bible speaks about sin, the only passages in the Bible that have nothing to say about sin and sinners are & 2 and & 22. The rest of the Bible from to deals with issues of sin one way or the other.

Sin is subtle, if you are living in sin, it will affect how you teach the word or live. It would muzzle your speech that you will make room for your sin rather than open up to the cleansing power of the word of God.

We can not save ourselves from sin. Sin is not a habit, some attitude or a potential we are failing to meet. It is enmity with God. It means we are not potentially good or inherently good.

The Beginning

God is not the author of sin -

The rebellion of Adam and Eve at the beginning is the source of sin in us all. details this event and from the event all humanity took on the nature of sin. puts all under sin from Adam.

, speaks of how long sin has been with us. It says it is from the beginning. It is something we choose to do ,

it comes from within our hearts.

The Situation

The situation is that we are all sinners, we cannot save ourselves. states it in the middle of a discourse on the righteousness of Christ. The heart is desperately wicked . We are radically corrupt or as some will say we suffer from **total depravity

We sin in different ways and the bible uses different ideas and words to show our sinfulness.

In the old testament, the words and ideas used to indicate sin include the following

1. _Khata_ which signifies ||sinning|| or sinned (; ) and could also mean ||missing the mark|| (Jug. 20:16, ).

2. _Pasha_signifies ||rebelling|| or ||trespassing|| or to ||betray|| like in

3. _Abar_means to transgress or to pass over (, )

In the new testament there are words and ideas used to communicate the sin problem

1. _Harmatia_which means to ||miss the mark||, ||err|| or ||be mistaken||. this is the main word translated as sin.

2. _Adika_which means ||unrighteousness|| or ||injustice|| (, )

3. _Planao_ means wandering or straying (; )

4. _Anomia_means lawlessness or rejection of God’s law

5. _Apeitheo_has the sense of being disobedient and willfully obstinate toward God’s will (; )

6. _Asebia_can be translated as ungodliness, wickedness or impiety ()

7. _Parabasis_ means breaking of or deviation from God’s law.

As a result of sin, we still die, we still fall ill, we still are afflicted with diseases but in Christ, our dying is turned into sleeping and from the sleep we shall awaken when the trumpet shall sound.

1 Corinthians 15:20–22 ESV

But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.

How often are we tempted to come to God with our “strong points”? We need to remember that everything about us has been tainted by sin

Systematic Theology F. The Results of the First Sin

This utter corruption of man is clearly taught in Scripture, Gen. 6:5; Ps. 14:3; Rom. 7:18

Genesis 6:5 ESV

The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Psalm 14:3 ESV

They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.

Romans 7:18 ESV

For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.

We need to change our walk and our pattern

Ephesians 4:17–19 ESV

Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.

The Solution

We cannot save ourselves. We need someone outside of ourselves to save us. There is nothing within us that speaks to God that we deserve saving.

Matthew 1:18–23 ESV

Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).

Jesus came to save us from sin.

By his death and resurrection, we have been freed from the power of sin

- This is how Christ is different and what he did differently.

Romans 5:12–21 ESV

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
