Hebrews 4:12
Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
The utterances of God, especially as revealed in Scripture. This may take the form of commands or promises. The term can also refer to Jesus Christ as the incarnate Word of God.
The word of God revealed as law
God has made his commands and requirements known
He has revealed his words to Jacob,
his decrees and regulations to Israel.
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write down all these instructions, for they represent the terms of the covenant I am making with you and with Israel.”
Moses remained there on the mountain with the Lord forty days and forty nights. In all that time he ate no bread and drank no water. And the Lord wrote the terms of the covenant—the Ten Commandments—on the stone tablets.
People from many nations will come and say,
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
to the house of Jacob’s God.
There he will teach us his ways,
and we will walk in his paths.”
For the Lord’s teaching will go out from Zion;
his word will go out from Jerusalem.
In this way, you say they don’t need to honor their parents. And so you cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition.
God’s law is to be obeyed
No, the message is very close at hand; it is on your lips and in your heart so that you can obey it.
“So be very careful to follow everything Moses wrote in the Book of Instruction. Do not deviate from it, turning either to the right or to the left.
You have charged us
to keep your commandments carefully.
Jesus replied, “My mother and my brothers are all those who hear God’s word and obey it.”
Jesus replied, “But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice.”
But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror.
The word of God as prophecy
The prophets spoke the words of God
God’s prophetic word came to Israel with varying frequency.
Then the Lord reached out and touched my mouth and said,
“Look, I have put my words in your mouth!
Then the woman told Elijah, “Now I know for sure that you are a man of God, and that the Lord truly speaks through you.”
“The time is surely coming,” says the Sovereign Lord,
“when I will send a famine on the land—
not a famine of bread or water
but of hearing the words of the Lord.
People will stagger from sea to sea
and wander from border to border
searching for the word of the Lord,
but they will not find it.
True prophecy is inspired by God
Above all, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own understanding, or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God.
In your love, you were patient with them for many years. You sent your Spirit, who warned them through the prophets. But still they wouldn’t listen! So once again you allowed the peoples of the land to conquer them.
Then this message came to me from the Lord: “Son of man, prophesy against the false prophets of Israel who are inventing their own prophecies. Say to them, ‘Listen to the word of the Lord. This is what the Sovereign Lord says: What sorrow awaits the false prophets who are following their own imaginations and have seen nothing at all!’
A true prophet hears from God
Jehoshaphat said, “Yes, the Lord speaks through him.” So the king of Israel, King Jehoshaphat of Judah, and the king of Edom went to consult with Elisha.
The prophetic word is to be heeded
They made their hearts as hard as stone, so they could not hear the instructions or the messages that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies had sent them by his Spirit through the earlier prophets. That is why the Lord of Heaven’s Armies was so angry with them.
The word of God as Scripture
Scripture is the written word of God
Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled.
New Testament writings are classified as Scripture
For the Scripture says, “You must not muzzle an ox to keep it from eating as it treads out the grain.” And in another place, “Those who work deserve their pay!”
speaking of these things in all of his letters. Some of his comments are hard to understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters to mean something quite different, just as they do with other parts of Scripture. And this will result in their destruction.
Scripture is inspired and true
And you know that the Scriptures cannot be altered. So if those people who received God’s message were called ‘gods,’
You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus.
The foundational importance of Scripture
It must not be distorted or changed:
You see, we are not like the many hucksters who preach for personal profit. We preach the word of God with sincerity and with Christ’s authority, knowing that God is watching us.
We reject all shameful deeds and underhanded methods. We don’t try to trick anyone or distort the word of God. We tell the truth before God, and all who are honest know this.
And if anyone removes any of the words from this book of prophecy, God will remove that person’s share in the tree of life and in the holy city that are described in this book.
It is to be read publicly:
Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them.
It is the basis for preaching:
Dear brothers and sisters, I have used Apollos and myself to illustrate what I’ve been saying. If you pay attention to what I have quoted from the Scriptures, you won’t be proud of one of your leaders at the expense of another.
It sets the limit of authoritative doctrine
In Conclusion:
Jesus Christ as the incarnate Word of God
Jesus Christ is God in the flesh
In the beginning the Word already existed.
The Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.
Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.
He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,
He wore a robe dipped in blood, and his title was the Word of God.
