Faith recap

Hebrews 11:1–3 ESV
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
Faith is trusting even when we don’t understand
Faith is a choice
Faith is an action
mentions many who displayed great faith:
Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Rahab, Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, & Samuel
these men and women did not live perfect lives but they are still listed under those who had faith because God wants us to see that WE (who are also imperfect) can be used by God if we too have faith...
Summary of Moses life:
born in Egypt at time when ruler of Egypt set out a decree that all the baby boys would be killed during this time (because he didn’t want them to grow powerful where they could overcome him).
Moses parents hid him until they could not hide him any longer and they put him in a basket that floated and send him down the river with faith that someone would find him and that he would live
the ruler of Egypts daughter found him and fell in love with him and took him as her own so Moses was born by slaves of Egypt but was raised as royalty
Moses knew that this is not what God wanted for him so as an adult he left Egypt and began taking care of livestock
God spoke to Moses through a burning bush and told him his mission was to lead the people of God out of slavery and out of Egypt
And he did...
: 23-
Hebrews 11:23–26 ESV
By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward.
We see from Moses’ parents that faith is sometimes risky
Look at Moses for a little bit
Hebrews 11:24–25 ESV
By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.
kids I’m not saying that you should disown your parents...
Matthew 10:37–39 ESV
Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
Sometimes faith will cause us to leave relationships with those that we love because they are keeping us from what God has for us...
Moses had a God given purpose to lead God’s people out of slavery from the Egyptians
Moses couldn’t have done that while in the kings palace
God has called YOU to praise Him, to honor Him with your life and with your tongue
what relationships in your life are keeping you from that?
- are you willing to change the negative relationships in your life in order to honor God
- or will you only honor God if it doesn’t inconvenience you?
They person that you are dating that is trying to get the benefits of marriage with you by shacking up but is not willing to be obedient to God by committing to you in marriage
this is tough but will you allow that relationship to keep you in sin or will you change that relationship to a place that honors God?
The group of people who you hang with maybe at work or school or on your free time that gossip or that put others down or share filthiness in conversation
decide which relationship is most important to you...
What does the Bible say about it
Proverbs
Proverbs 12:26 ESV
One who is righteous is a guide to his neighbor, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.
Proverbs 13:20 ESV
Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.
1 Corinthians 15:33 ESV
Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”
He is not saying that we should be alone but...
Hebrews 10:25 ESV
not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 ESV
Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!
Why does God put so much emphasis on having the right people in your life?
because it is crucial to you living in obedience to God’s will for your life
Hebrews 11:24-26
Hebrews 11:24–26 ESV
By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward.
Faith and obedience is not the easy path nor is it the most appealing at glance from a distance BUT when we see the eternal reward it is worth it
I do not preach a Gospel about health & wealth because it is not the truth
I believe that no hope is better than false hope but that the TRUTH is aways the best!
On justice:
God keeps score. He promises to heal the wounded, reward the faithful, and punish the wicked
2 Corinthians 5:10 ESV
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.
). But he doesn’t promise to do any of that until after heaven and earth are remade without the curse of sin. He promises justice. He does not promise swift justice.
But he doesn’t promise to do any of that until after heaven and earth are remade without the curse of sin. He promises justice. He does not promise swift justice.
God is patient with us all ...
2 Peter 3:9 ESV
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
That’s a great comfort until we realize that he’s also patient with those who harm, oppress, and offend us.
That’s a great comfort until we realize that he’s also patient with those who harm, oppress, and offend us.
We’re told to wait on God’s perfect plan to be carried out on his perfect time
).
Psalm 37:7 ESV
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!
While justice will come it will not be until this sinful life is over
On Comfort:
Many hold to a false promise that obeying God will lead to material prosperity and success. But God never promised his followers an easy life. In fact, he warned us to expect the opposite
John 16:33 ESV
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
There will be hardship and persecution from the world, and even correction from God’s own hand
Hebrews 12:7 ESV
It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?
).
The Christian life is not a comfortable life, but it is a fulfilling one.
On transformation:
I love hearing stories of miraculous life transformation. They fuel my faith in the changing power of God’s Word more than anything else. But they also plant a desire for the same sort of instant change in my own life.
Yet still I still wrestle with sinful habits in my life
Hebrews 12:1 ESV
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
). Much as I love to see instant change in others, and long to experience it myself, I must remember that God has promised to change me, but hasn’t promised to do it instantly.
As much as I love to see instant change in others, and long to experience it myself, I must remember that God has promised to change me, but hasn’t promised to do it instantly.
He has promised to complete the transformative work that he’s begun in me a promise that implies this change is going to take a while.
Philippians 1:6 ESV
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
We may see injustice around us but let us be patient knowing that one day we will all stand before God and that without the blood of Jesus to cover our sins we will be found guilty
We may not find a life of comfort but one with fulfilling purpose
and that we may not have instant change in our life but when we live in the will of God we will have a continuous work of change in our lives to become more like Jesus
wrapping up what Moses did that shown his faith is that he chose the relationships that brought him into the will of God and left the ones that kept him from it
and that he chose to be mistreated with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin
Close with HOW
Hebrews 11:
Hebrews 11:26 ESV
He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward.
He knew that even the earthly pain that he may endure in Christs Name was still greater than the treasures that the king of Egypt could provide
BECAUSE he was looking to the reward
it’s kind of like buying a car
some will see what is the nicest that you will sell me without regard to the fact that they can’t afford it
they may enjoy it for a while but later either realize that they have become slaves to their car payment and now other areas of their life are suffering or they may even lose the car because they couldn’t keep up with the payments
others may buy a less expensive car now knowing that it will allow them to save money and not be bound to it in the future
Dave Ramsey says that if we are willing to live like no one else now then we can live like no one else later
He is a Christian financial advisor
if we sacrifice in this moment and make wise decisions rather than immediate emotional ones
one day we will reap what we have sacrificed for
In the same way we can apply with to our lives
if you are willing to make some tough changes now and work hard to be obedient to Christ
that one day you will live with Jesus in heaven for eternity!
We must look to the reward!
Hebrews 11:27
Hebrews 11:27 ESV
By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible.
How did Moses do this?
by faith…
knowing that faith is a choice he chose the God whom his eyes could not see
because he trusted in God
Where is your faith this morning?
