Introduction:

1. Everyone who walks this earth is a slave.

2. Everyone has a master of some form or fashion

3. For many, their master is sin which takes many forms

4. Those of us who are in Christ have been freed from sin and have become slaves of righteousness.

5. We’re going to look at 3 ways in which we have been freed from sin.

I. Freed Through Baptism (v. 1-5)

a. Before baptism we are slaves to sin.

i. talks of how we can either be slaves to sin or we can be slaves of righteousness

1. - 34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.

b. We were buried with Christ in baptism and raised to walk in newness of life.

i. - 11 In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.

ii. - 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

iii. - 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

c. Baptism is the point in which we choose to be slaves of righteousness and we receive freedom through the forgiveness of sins.

1. – we are baptized for the forgiveness of sins.

2. – our sins are washed away at baptism.

d. When we are united with Christ in his death we will experience a resurrection like his.

II. Freed Through Death of Old Self (v. 6-11)

a. Our old self was crucified with Christ ending our bondage to sin.

i. – we have put off our old self and our sinful ways and put on the new self.

ii. – we have put off the old self and its practices and put on the new self which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.

b. When we die with Christ we will live with him.

i. – If we have died with him, we will also live with him;

ii. - Jesus even prayed that his desire was for all who would believe in him would be with him.

c. We must consider ourselves dead to sin and alive in Christ Jesus.

i. – How can we who are dead to sin still live in it?

ii. – we cannot walk in the light and in darkness at the same time.

iii. – friendship with the world is enmity with God.

III. Freed Through Obedience (12-14)

a. Don’t let sin control you

i. – God told Cain that sin was crouching at the door but he had to rule over it.

ii. – Moses set life through obedience or death through disobedience before the Israelites pleading with them to choose life.

iii. – Blessed is the one who remains steadfast. Sin enters our lives when we succumb to our own sinful desires.

b. We need to present ourselves to God as instruments of righteousness through our obedience.

i. – we need to be obedient slaves of God’s righteousness

ii. - I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

iii. – Those who believe will have eternal life and those who do not obey will not see life.

iv. - 9 And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, 10 being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

v. – Through our love of God and our obedience to him we overcome the world.

c. When we are under God’s grace, sin has no dominion over us.

i. - There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

Conclusion:

1. We have been freed from sin through baptism.

2. We have been freed from sin through the death of our old self.

3. We have been freed from sin through our obedience to God’s word
