The psalm opens with praise for the Temple and for those who live there (verses 1–4); praise is also expressed for the pilgrims as they come to the Temple (verses 5–7). A prayer for the king follows (verses 8–9), after which God is praised as the source of all happiness and security (verses 10–12).

A Psalm of the Sons of Korah
Desire to be in the temple- “I love”
LORD of host “YAHWEH of armies”
“faints” suggest longing=desire
Envies the birds b/c they are there- 3-4
alters- Solomon’s temple- burnt offerings & gold alter= incense
priest & levites
5-7 sings of the happiness of the pilgrims
traveling thru dry desolate deserts to Mt. Zion
start strengthened by GOD & grow stronger as they travel
8-9 Hear my prayer & pay attention to your child, “LORD of Hosts”
“our shield” 89.18
“behold & look” = favor, bless
10-12 Praise for the temple & the GOD there
source of happiness & security
“sun & shield” = guidance & protection
“ I want to be where you are”
