What is Perception?
Think of all the ways in which you experience the world around you. For example, you recognize your favorite food by its aroma and the way it looks. You recognize an orange by its round shape, citrus flavor, and its color. You recognize a song by listening to its melody and the singer's voice. It is through these sensory experiences that we interact with and interpret things in our world. Recognizing and interpreting sensory information, such as sound and smells, are all a part of perception.
Perception can be defined as our recognition and interpretation of sensory information. Perception also includes how we respond to the information. We can think of perception as a process where we take in sensory information from our environment and use that information in order to interact with our environment. Perception allows us to take the sensory information in and make it into something meaningful.
Perception is the way how a person understands something and different people may have different perceptions for the same thing. Realty, on the other hand, is the truth and the actual existence of something.
Your perspective is the way you see something.
Perspective has a Latin root meaning "look through" or "perceive," and all the meanings of perspective have something to do with looking.

Day 5—(1st day) Philip and Nathanael come to Jesus (1:43-51)
John 1:45 ESV
Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
John 1:
John 1:45 ESV
Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
“We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote.”
Very important statement! Philip tells Nathanael we found him…
The one we have read from Moses in the Law.
The one who the prophets wrote about.
They knew their old testament
Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
He’s from where and related to who!
Interesting connection - What I think should be vs. The reality of what is!
John 1:46 ESV
Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
John 1:
When perception speaks!
“Nathanael said to him, Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”
We don’t know much at all about Nazareth in Jesus’ day. Nazareth is barely, if ever, mentioned in first century documents outside of Scripture. The little we do know is largely speculative and wholly unremarkable. Apparently scholars suggests that Nazareth was a small community of anywhere between 500 and 2000 people.
Nazareth had to have some type of cloud over it. - What was the perception of Nazareth?
Remember Nazareth?
We will allow our perception to cause us to speak - Can anything good come out of Nazareth?
With one question, Nathanael perception of Nazareth caused him to put Jesus in a small box based on his perception.
Two things that we struggle with:
We put people in boxes based on our perception.
We put ourselves in a box based on your perception.
The only way you can change your perception is by exposing your senses
The only way you can break out of the box is to step out of faith..,
Phillip Said “Come See.”
John 1:47 ESV
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!”
When Grace speaks:
Your perception is not always a true reflection of who you really are.
An Israelite indeed - One who is really an Israelite - not by birth only, but one worthy of the name. One who possesses the spirit, the piety, and the integrity which become a man who is really a Jew, who fears God and obeys his law. Compare ; .

No guile - No deceit, no fraud, no hypocrisy. He is really what he professes to be - a Jew, a descendant of the patriarch Jacob, fearing and serving God. He makes no profession which he does not live up to. He does not say that Nathanael was without guilt or sin, but that he had no disguise, no trick, no deceit - he was sincere and upright.
John 1:48 ESV
Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”
Very Powerful
Jesus tells Nathanael “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”
Before you were able to come to a conclusion about me I saw you!
I knew the you before you put me in a box!
I knew the you before you put yourself in a box!
I saw the you - The dreamer
I saw the you - The go getter
John 1
John 1:49 ESV
Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
His perception changed because he allowed himself to be exposed to something different! Something Greater…
John 1:50 ESV
Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”
If we can change our perception - We will see greater things!!!
