School, to earn degree in business from Colorado Christian University
Just finished writing my final for my leadership and management class.
There are many different ideas and philosophies about leadership.
what is the best way to lead
authoritarian -
group leadership
100 different variations in-between.
something hit me while I had been studying in this class
2
Separation between the business world and the church.
keep your business out of the church.
when in the business place, keep your church out of our business.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness. So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
Matthew
he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
So what is the Christian to do? Lead differently in the business world than in the church?
d
Imagine this for a moment.
-lets say at work I lead my team in an authoritarian like manor. Meaning I am the soul voice. Communication is one way. and you the follower are told to do your task and keep quiet. do exactly as I say.
-I lead through discipline and write ups when goals are not met.
-Never give credit, because when you succeed you are just doing your job. Your reward is solely getting paid.
Then imagine at the training center I completely change my persona.
- I try to be helpful.
- I speak on Servant based leadership
Now say someone from work sees me here, or someone here sees me at work. It would be strange.
One might call me a double minded man.
People are people whether they are in the Church or outside the church.
People need to be the same whether inside or outside the church.
This separation comes because of a difference in Motives and Money.
Business
The goal of a business is to provide a product or service to a customer.
In turn they earn a profit.
Is there anything wrong with that? NO
For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer is worthy of his wages.”

b. What is the goal of the church. “purpose statement”
And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
in this example of scripture there are 4 things.
Teach biblical doctrine
Provide a place for fellowship of believers
The Lord’s Supper (communion)
Prayer.
Christ’s vision was.
The Great commission is another part. The proclamation of the saving gospel through Jesus Christ.
2.
but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,
Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
Because what is the will of God?
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
What if I told you I bought a motor boat and I’m going to take it and drive it to Arizona.
Or if i bought a truck and said I was going to drive it to the Bahamas.
-they were built for different things. neither is “wrong”. There perspectives are different.
-with that said, there are some similarities between a motor boat .
- They both have an engine, a steering wheel. but there objectives are different.
-and in some cases you even need a truck to get a boat to its location
The church and the business world have different goals and objectives, however, the engine, or driving force for the christian is CHRIST in both the workforce and the church.
The first thing church leadership needs is to define its goals and objectives.
OR VISION. (POINT 1)
WERE THERE IS NO VISION THE PEOPLE PERISH
ANY LEADER NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND THEIR GOALS AND OBJECTIVES.
So what are the goals and objectives here at the training center?(Interns)
what poorly communicated vision gets you.
-IMPACT- The quest for REVIVAL> what needed to be revived was US!
2. LEADERS AND FOLLOWERS
2. LEADERS AND FOLLOWERS
different kinds of leaders. Formal, and informal
Every Leader is a follower.
Formal Leadership. (floor employee, supervisor, manager, sr. management, CEO/President)
c. Even the CEO is a follower. (Share holders and the consumer)
let me explain.
d. You hear it said that there are only two thing certain (Death and taxes)
i. I would argue you need to add change to that. Change is going to happen. It’s inevitable.
2. In the Church. The head is normally a pastor or some sort of leadership board.
Notice this tread. Pastor Troy follow a leader.
Even if it is not someone we see.
Paul said this to the church at Corinth.
Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.
and Christ perhaps the greatest leader example of all time said this
So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.
b. People we see in church leadership are followers, and if not a follower of an individual, then that of Christ.
Where there is no guidance, a people falls,
but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.
Without counsel plans fail,
but with many advisers they succeed.
Christian leaders are set up to be followers. That was Christ’s example and it is ours.
I recently interviewed my mom for this class. She is an amazingly successful business woman.
Question: what are some of the greatest lessons you learned while in upper management?
“You don’t have to have all the answers, you have solutions in people who work for you, above you. peers, employees, clients.
The Body Of Christ needs to function as that, a BODY.
from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord;
1
Makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
2. Definition of leadership:Leadership occurs whenever one person attempts to influence the behavior of an individual or group, regardless of the reason. It may be for someones own goals or for the goals of others, and these goals may or may not be congruent with those of the organization. (Hersey, Blanchard).
There are good leaders and bad Leaders.
Good ways to lead people and bad ways to lead people.
Back to leadership styles.
Does anyone know who Robert K. Greenleaf is?
Well to the Business world he is the one who came up with servant leadership in the 1970’s
Or should I say Coined the phrase “servant leadership”
The Amazingness of Christ. Seeing him as a leader. (I know he is the servant of all) and our leader. but there are some extremely practical extremely efficient ways in how he leads.
They can be applied to the the body of Christ or the work environment.
3. Motivation (Why do people do what they do?)
3. Motivation (Why do people do what they do?)
You Know who is a great example of Leadership Jesus.
Why do people do what they do? Well Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs goes to explain some of the theory about this.
At the bottom is Physiological needs, then Safety (security), Social (affliction) being apart of something, esteem (recognition), Self -Actualization.
Really the main thing to get is that people do-things because of what is motivating them.
people must have some sort of motivation to do something.
A good leader recognizes what motivates people and uses that to strengthen them and build upon them. Its sort of a basis of servant leadership.
THE SERVANT LEADER IS
For example
first one who wants to serve first.
then consiouche choes brings one to aspire to lead
vast difference than the leader first mentality
Leader first seeks after, power or material possessions first.
now there are in betweens of this.
The biggest difference is in how servant first mentality makes sure that other peoples higher priority needs are being served.
results of the servant leader are measured by
Do those being served as a person grow?
Do they while being served, become healthier, wiser freer. And are they too becoming servants.;
we in the Church call it discipleship.
EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT AND MOTIVATED DIFFERENTLY. 2 examples.
In the book of Matthew.
The fishing metaphor. In the book of Matthew, the 4th chapter
Two brothers Peter and Andrew are fishing
Jesus walking along the sea of Galilee
Jesus calls out to them and says, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of Men”.
In the book of Acts chapter 17
Paul at Mars Hill stands in the Areopagus (a prominent feature in ancient Athens) and begins to teach about Christ
He does this by using something that he noticed in the Greek culture. A statue to the unknown god.
Using this statue Paul began to proclaim the gospel of Jesus.
Verse 34 of chapter 17 tells us that some men joined Paul, and believed the gospel.
Jesus used a fishing Metaphor and Paul used an Idol.
However, both motivated people differently. Notice they did in fact motivate them.
Motivation Not Manipulation. Let me explain.
Motivating someone changes them internally to do something
Manipulation is getting someone to do something whether they want to or not.
- while the summer interns were here I observed something.
So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘To the unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for
“ ‘In him we live and move and have our being’;
as even some of your own poets have said,
“ ‘For we are indeed his offspring.’
Being then God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man. The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”
- many were put into a position of “leadership” for the first time.
-Some of the summer interns did not like that and there was this sort of power struggle.
- Instead of servant leadership I saw authoritarian leadership. Do this because I said so.
- for example… and I’m making this up. Lets say you are trying to get someone to take out the trash. They seem reluctant, and don’t want to do it.
-ah… a leadership opportunity. You can say Well you’re going to do it because I told you to. Or you can explain to them the bigger picture. Try to motivate them into doing it rather than strong arming.
- an example of manipulation could be, well you are being disobedient, and disobedience is like the sin of witch craft. So if you don’t do this you are going to end up in Hell. (manipulation) they may do it but it is for the wrong reasons.
a. Think about another approach. O put yourself in their shoes for a second. Maybe it’s best to lead this person by asking for help.
c. Hey could you help me take out the trash?
d. Now we are talking motivation. they are motivated to help you, and that is going to accomplish the task at hand.
“Leadership is not all about saying and doing the right things. It’s about motivating people to do the right things.”
4. Servant Leadership. (Situational leadership)
4. Servant Leadership. (Situational leadership)
Another way to look at servant leadership. Is to think of it as Situational leadership.
Everyone is not the same and just like motivation, they need to be lead differently. What works with one, or motivates one may not the other.
There are 4 basic levels of readiness for people. And there are 4 basic leadership responses to address the situation.
(1 John would call it, children, young men, and fathers) I write to you little children. I write you young men. I write to you FathersUsing the wrong leadership style to the wrong performance readiness can be detrimental. And not with just fixing a car. (Example later)
People different skill levels
confidence levels
and attitudes. ( willing and unwilling).Behavior vs attitude. The parable of the tow sons
“What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind and went. And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him.
That means that each person (or group)this applies to groups as well. Needs a different leadership style.
-Pastor Troy
Take someone who is at that performance readiness level 1. unable and insecure or unwilling.
This is would be the equivalent of me giving my wife a wrench. and then telling her i want her to replace the injectors on my truck. She is going to be insecure, unwilling and unable to do so.
If I let him go to town and try to fix your car by him self. Well chances are you are going to be
What is the response that I as a leader should have to some one at this level? (high Task, Low Relatinship).
2. There are 4 basic levels of readiness for people. And there are 4 basic leadership responses to address the situation.
r)
Using the wrong leadership style to the wrong performance readiness can be detrimental. And not with just fixing a car.
Take someone who is at that performance readiness level 1. unable and insecure or unwilling.
What is the response that I as a leader should have to some one at this level?
with fixing a car, it is going to be highly task oriented. We’re going to learn parts identification, theory and other stuff like that. High task and low relationship.
I’m not going to be filling in a lot of two way dialogue. It’s going to be teaching.
a. Now before you say, well Ryan, didn’t you say everyone was different.
I. Well, YES I DID. And there are sub groups of what I am about to talk about. Absolutely. However, this is a practical starting point of recognition and response.
c. As you grow as a leader you will be able to adjust your style accordingly. But you need a place to start.
4. Performance level 2. Unable but confident or willing.
Take this for example. Let’s say that I have a guy who wants to fix cars with me. But he does not have; experience, knowledge or training. But he has drive and desire.
If I let him go to town and try to fix your car by him self. Well chances are you are going to be
a. The person is now starting to learn. They know the difference between the mirror and a rim. Their starting to get the picture. However they are still lacking in ability .
b. SO what does a response or a leadership style look like? Well Now it is still High Task, because the ability level is low. But it is there and growing.
c. There is going to be more of a 2 way dialog. Questions answering. Clarification. It would be considered a High relationship and High task oriented leadership style.
D. Finding people doing the right thing in this stage is huge. Reward good behavior. It is reaffirming of what someone is doing.
E. IT is just as important if not MORE important to know when you are doing something right.
Take someone who is new to the TC. A first year intern or the summer intern. It’s a time for them to Grow.
PT AND THE MIC. ON the Streets.
5. Performance Level 3.
A. This person is able but lacks confidence in there ability or is unwilling.
c.they way you lead some one who lacks confidence is different that some one who is unwilling.
6. When I think of performance level 4 I think of Joe Gonzales.
6. When i t hink of perfomance level 4 I think of JoE Gonzales.
Low task and low relationship driven. I don’t have to work and create buy-in.
He knows what he needs to do to get things accomplished.
And he is willing to take others and teach. PT does not have to worry about what he is doing, or if things are getting done.
SUMMAMRY
SUMMAMRY
Let’s tie this into ministry. You’ve seen PT take a microphone and hand it to some one on the spot for the first time. Sort of pushing them to preach.
That was strategic! I guarantee he was aware of that persons readiness level.
If we try to imitate PT in this action to someone who is unwilling, or to just push it on some one it can have devastating effects.
If you were going to do something like that, the more helpful thing would be to talk with them before hand. Help prepare them so they are ready. Talk it out. And then if you need to be that push for them to take the mike go for it. but not before they’re ready.
I SAY ALL THAT TO SAY THIS. Using the wrong leadership style with someone can be detrimental to their way. (IMPACT) REBUKE FEST!
2. Applying the wrong leadership strategy or manipulating people, can get un warranted results.
a. You can get someone who puts up a front and never deals with issues
C. you can discourage some one rather than edify
After all our goal is to see internal heart change. Anything less is failure.
thats the equivalent of an old baptist mentality. If you wear a suit and tie and show up to church it doesn't matter what you do.
God requires an internal heart change not an external action.
It is our job as leaders, and I say even Followers, to help build each other up. edify one another.
Leaders need to be able to see people and their abilities, and then help them grow.
Take the time to know people before leading, whether in a formal or informal role.
Be a servant leader, lead to see people grow, not to make a point, or to be seen.
whether it is a business or a church, we want people to work together toward common goals. We want genuine change, and that is done through proper leadership.
AMEN!-
