Learning to Face a Trial

Jesus and His disciples made their way out of Jerusalem by the gate to the north of the temple and descended toward the Kidron, which at that time of year would have been swollen into a torrent.
They crossed the stream and turned left where the road ran toward the mount of Olives. Soon they went off the road to the right and arrived at Gethsemane (“the oil-press”), a small enclosed garden where olive trees doubtless grew. Edersheim speculated that it belonged to Mark’s father.
This is a life's lesson for Peter!
He does not know know what exactly is going to happen to Jesus.
But this time in the Garden of Gethsemane would be a teaching lesson on how to approach an upcoming trail;
Jesus is not praying to get out of a trial.
John 12:27 KJV 1900
27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.
John 27.28
He is not trying to avoid conflict
He is not trying to avoid conflict
Jesus knows what is coming
he know what is comming
Peter will face many conflicts in the future that will be the same:
The Jews are outside to take you - Acts
When you know trouble or a trail is coming what do you do?
Run
Pretend it will not happen
Ignore it
You have cancer
you must confront someone
You know you are going to loose your job
You must address sin
How can address this?
Jesus gave a formula of how to address an upcoming conflict.
Illustration - conflict in the church - Ted Finn, Art Stark and Randy Lors
Habakkuk 3:2 KJV 1900
2 O Lord, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O Lord, revive thy work in the midst of the years, In the midst of the years make known; In wrath remember mercy.

I The Place

Matthew 26:36 KJV 1900
36 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.
Exploring the Gospel of Matthew: An Expository Commentary 1. Jesus and His Closest Followers (26:36)

Jesus headed to a place for prayer
Got alone and took his most trusted with him
The Bible Knowledge Commentary 26:36–46 (Mark 14:32–42; Luke 22:39–46; John 18:1)

Jesus then went … to a place known as Gethsemane, which means “an oil press.” In a field covered with olive trees, oil presses were used to extract oil from the fruit. An olive grove was in that place (John 18:1).

Get away from the noise and bring someone with you ....
This was a teaching time for Peter, James and John!
Have someone you can confide in
They would learn later on what this would mean
Jesus had a place for prayer
The place of prayer is a place of power. Miracles are done in it.
When the disciples were praying, the Holy Spirit descended.
When the Church was praying at John Mark's house, Peter was let out of prison by an angel.
The hour we spend in communing with God is the most strengthening in the week.
The hour we spend in communing with God is the most strengthening in the week.
We get the victory in the prayer room where no eye sees but God's, and all hearts are one before Him.
The prayer circle is a place of instruction. Prayer is a great teacher.
The word of truth is unfolded there; mysteries are explained; promises are fulfilled; deliverances are wrought.
What God teaches in prayer is pure truth; what we learn on our knees we never unlearn.
The place of prayer is a place of rest after toil, of comfort in perplexity and trouble.
It is good to draw near to God. "Draw nigh unto Me and I will draw nigh unto you."
It is a place of fellowship,
It is a place of fellowship,
A place for replenishing the daily losses of the heart, and enthroning God again at the seat of the soul.

II The Priority

Matthew 26:37–38 KJV 1900
37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. 38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.
matt 26.37-
While Jesus went away He gave his three disciple a simple command!
A priority watch!
Be alert look out
In other words - watch with him vs 38
The priority we face when confronting a trial is to watch -be alert
Don’t fall asleep or get side tracked
Jesus was teaching His men that to observe Him and His prayer.
When facing a trail we get sidetracked.
Matthew 26:39 KJV 1900
39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
matt
They slept and missed it, they were not far away to visualize and hear what jesus was saying....
some suggest he was telling his disciples to watch or look out for Judas and the soldiers coming to arrest jesus.
if that’s the case why not have all 11 rather than three
I believe He was instructing them on watching and being alert on His prayer and His words.
‘Not my will but yours”
Believer’s Bible Commentary G. The Agony in Gethsemane (26:36–46)

Therefore, in praying that the cup might pass from Him, He was not asking to be delivered from going to the cross. That was the very purpose of His coming into the world!

The prayer was rhetorical, that is, it was not intended to elicit an answer but to teach us a lesson. Jesus was saying in effect, “My Father, if there is any other way by which ungodly sinners can be saved than by My going to the cross, reveal that way now! But in all of this, I want it known that I desire nothing contrary to Your will.”

When facing an upcoming invaluable trial we want God’s Will.

III The Progress

Matthew 26:46 KJV 1900
46 Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.
matt 26.4
Now is time to face the trial
Matthew 26:47 KJV 1900
47 And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.
