INTRO:
Now concerning the collection for the saints: as I directed the churches of Galatia, so you also are to do. On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come. And when I arrive, I will send those whom you accredit by letter to carry your gift to Jerusalem. If it seems advisable that I should go also, they will accompany me.
Background — Jerusalem relief offering:

For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God.
For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have.

for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part.

For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea. For you suffered the same things from your own countrymen as they did from the Jews,

For they were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have come to share in their spiritual blessings, they ought also to be of service to them in material blessings.
Our Giving is a PRIVILEGE.
Our Giving is a PRIVILEGE.
Look, Paul doesn’t just drop this out of thin air. He’s not pulling a slick telemarketing/salesman trick. You know…wait until the end — “now I’m gonna ask you for money.”
This issue with the Jerusalem church is obviously something they knew about and the reason Paul mentions it, here, is because they have apparently asked to help out!
Now it is superfluous for me to write to you about the ministry for the saints, for I know your readiness, of which I boast about you to the people of Macedonia, saying that Achaia has been ready since last year. And your zeal has stirred up most of them.
Our Giving must be a PRIORITY.

“First day of the week...” Before you do anything else, you set aside something to give. So many times, we give God our leftovers. We’ll give if we “can” this week. We’ll give if we’ve got enough left after we buy that new purse, go on vacation, fix up the truck, etc.

Paul knew that this might be an issue in Corinth...
But I am sending the brothers so that our boasting about you may not prove empty in this matter, so that you may be ready, as I said you would be. Otherwise, if some Macedonians come with me and find that you are not ready, we would be humiliated—to say nothing of you—for being so confident. So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to go on ahead to you and arrange in advance for the gift you have promised, so that it may be ready as a willing gift, not as an exaction.
2 Corinthians 9:

Yeah, but the kids got braces…we had such-and-such come up.
Our Giving Requires EQUAL PARTICIPATION.

Let’s talk, first, about the “each of you.”
You may not be called to go, but you are commanded to participate.

Why? Because the task is great. According to the “Joshua Project,” there are 6,991 unreached people groups in the world today. That’s over 3.1 BILLION people. Let that sink in for a minute.
This is a task that requires the WHOLE CHURCH. Because of the Lottie Moon Christmas offering, in 2015, 1.9 million people heard the gospel, 175,00+ new believers, 15,000+ new pastors trained, 6,000+ new churches planted.
The 10/40 Window is the rectangular area of North Africa, the Middle East and Asia approximately between 10 degrees north and 40 degrees north latitude. The 10/40 Window is often called "The Resistant Belt" and includes the majority of the world's Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists. Approximately 4.95 billion individuals residing in approximately 8,466 distinct people groups are in the revised 10/40 Window. 5,852 (69.1%) of these people groups are considered unreachedand have a population of 3.06 billion. This means approximately 62% of the individuals in the 10/40 Window live in an unreached people group.
“As he may prosper...”
Not all gifts are equal but there is a sacrifice involved for all.
Paul is saying that each should give relative to how God has blessed.
2 Corinthians 96-
The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.
He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission that comes from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!
2 Corinthians 9:10-
Nobody is going to come knocking on your door to tell you how much you should give. That’s a work God does in each individual heart.
Let me say it again…the task is great. Each week, your giving goes to CP and local ministries…God has blessed us this year and we have a surplus…I’m hoping to announce on December 3 how we will be able to bless our mission partners.
And in this matter I give my judgment: this benefits you, who a year ago started not only to do this work but also to desire to do it. So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have. For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have.

For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness
2 Corinthians 8:
your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness. As it is written, “Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack.”

Why does it matter? Our God - at his very core - is a giver. He gives spiritual gifts. He gives grace. He gives himself.
I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.
