Don’t give up

Overcome Jericho

In promised Land
worshiped false god
Overcoming What is on the inside
Joshua 6:1 ESV
Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside because of the people of Israel. None went out, and none came in.
Instructed to kill everyone who lived in the city except for Rahab & her family
shut up no one in and no one out
b/c she had turned her heart and helped Israel
Joshua 6:17 ESV
And the city and all that is within it shall be devoted to the Lord for destruction. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall live, because she hid the messengers whom we sent.
Josh 6:
Instructed to destroy everything in the city ...
What is good is not what was good but what we have for and the decisions that we make
Joshua 6:19 ESV
But all silver and gold, and every vessel of bronze and iron, are holy to the Lord; they shall go into the treasury of the Lord.”
used for God’s purpose
Getting Rid of What was not good:
Joshua 6:18 ESV
But you, keep yourselves from the things devoted to destruction, lest when you have devoted them you take any of the devoted things and make the camp of Israel a thing for destruction and bring trouble upon it.
There are things in our lives that are toxic that God has called us to destroy
the reason is that if we do not destroy them that they will destroy us and keep us from worshiping God
How do we know what is in need of destruction?
Romans 12:1–2 ESV
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
does it enable you to do this?
does watching that show, listening to that song, wearing those clothes, talking with that person, ect. lead me to worship?
if no then something needs to change
Sometimes that means that something needs destroyed...
might mean that game of thrones is no longer a part of your week
or “Puddle of Mud” might need to be deleted from your downloads
Joshua 6:26 ESV
Joshua laid an oath on them at that time, saying, “Cursed before the Lord be the man who rises up and rebuilds this city, Jericho. “At the cost of his firstborn shall he lay its foundation, and at the cost of his youngest son shall he set up its gates.”
Josh 6:29
serious offence to rebuild what God has taken away
What God
Do not rebuild the things that are were for destruction
Some things were not needed for destruction
Joshua 6:19 ESV
But all silver and gold, and every vessel of bronze and iron, are holy to the Lord; they shall go into the treasury of the Lord.”
to be used for the Lord
someone who loves to sing but used that desire and gift for singing non-Christian songs could convert their desire and gift into singing praises to God
someone who has carpentry skills could volunteer to build a shelter for the homeless
someone who is a good teacher could teach others about Jesus
Someone who is wealthy could use their excess for the good of others or the purposes of God
Joshua 7:1 ESV
But the people of Israel broke faith in regard to the devoted things, for Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. And the anger of the Lord burned against the people of Israel.
Joshua
Achan took some of the gold and silver and kept it for himself
this angered God b/c God had said to give it to the treasury
when God speaks for you to do something in your life; you should do it!
But no one knew that Achan had did this and they went about their normal business
Joshua sent men to Ai to defeat another enemy but they did not defeat them
Ai killed 36 of God’s people
Joshua freaks out doubting God and asking Him what is going on
Joshua 7:10–12 ESV
The Lord said to Joshua, “Get up! Why have you fallen on your face? Israel has sinned; they have transgressed my covenant that I commanded them; they have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen and lied and put them among their own belongings. Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will be with you no more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you.
Josh 7:10-
Later they find that Achan has hidden Gold and Silver in the ground under his tent
consequences for disobedience
b/c sometimes we think that we know better than God and that we can keep for ourselves what was to be given to God or not destroy what needed to be taken out of our lives
we will never hide anything from God; can’t outsmart God or trick Him
consequences for disobedience
Cosequences for
We will not continue in God’s blessings until we are living in His direction
Joshua 10:12 ESV
At that time Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord gave the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, “Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.”
Joshua 7:12 ESV
Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will be with you no more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you.
2. Our disobedience will not only affect us but also those around us
Joshua 7:5 ESV
and the men of Ai killed about thirty-six of their men and chased them before the gate as far as Shebarim and struck them at the descent. And the hearts of the people melted and became as water.
3. Our disobedience will lead us to the wrath of God
BUT WHEN GOD USES REBUKE FOR OUR GOOD
Joshua 7:26 ESV
And they raised over him a great heap of stones that remains to this day. Then the Lord turned from his burning anger. Therefore, to this day the name of that place is called the Valley of Achor.
Josh 7:
remove the things that need taken from your life
transform the things that need to be used for the goodness of God
Joshua 7:1–9 ESV
But the people of Israel broke faith in regard to the devoted things, for Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. And the anger of the Lord burned against the people of Israel. Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth-aven, east of Bethel, and said to them, “Go up and spy out the land.” And the men went up and spied out Ai. And they returned to Joshua and said to him, “Do not have all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai. Do not make the whole people toil up there, for they are few.” So about three thousand men went up there from the people. And they fled before the men of Ai, and the men of Ai killed about thirty-six of their men and chased them before the gate as far as Shebarim and struck them at the descent. And the hearts of the people melted and became as water. Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lord until the evening, he and the elders of Israel. And they put dust on their heads. And Joshua said, “Alas, O Lord God, why have you brought this people over the Jordan at all, to give us into the hands of the Amorites, to destroy us? Would that we had been content to dwell beyond the Jordan! O Lord, what can I say, when Israel has turned their backs before their enemies! For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it and will surround us and cut off our name from the earth. And what will you do for your great name?”
God set things for destruction
we see and want to have things that God wants to destroy
we take things and then our enemy has control over us because we have not been in obedience to the Lord
we not only struggle ourselves but our family will struggle
