Introduction
Last week...
Paul’s prayer of thanksgiving
Church he did not start
This week...
The object of our thankfulness
Who are we to be thankful to and why?
The answer to who is Jesus and the answer to why is the Gospel
Paul is still addressing the issues in this church that he did not plant
Paul uses a hymn/poem in vss. 15-20
Sidebar: Why rich songs are important
Begin Exposition
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
First stanza of the hymn teaches us about who He is that is the object of our thanks
the verse starts with“He is”
Who is HE?
vs. 13
13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,
The image of the invisible God-
This passage teaches us much about Jesus
First, that he is, not simply possessing the image of God, as all mankind does, but the image of the invisible...
explain
Second, Firstborn of all creation
explain firstborn of all creation
16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
Vs. 16 continues teaching us about Jesus
He is the creator of all things
“through Him and for Him”
17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
Pointing back to Jesus as first born, Paul reminds that Jesus is in tht firstborn position
Jesus holds all things together
Paul is hinting at the truth of the Divinity of Christ here
18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
Head of the church?
The beginning
firstborn from the dead
resurrection
Jesus deserves first place in everything
I. Jesus is positionally firstborn and the creator of all and, thus deserves to be first in your life (15-18)
I. Jesus is positionally firstborn and the creator of all and, thus deserves to be first in your life (15-18)
Think of Jesus as creator
Think if Him as firstborn
Point 2
19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,
Jesus is gully God
trinity
20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
Jesus has, through his own work, reconciled all things to himself.
What is this all things?
Does this teach universalism?
Does this teach that even Satan and his demons will be reconciled?
No
I think the best way to understand this is that all things will exist as intended.
That this is not Just talking about people and angels but about the whole of creation and that God is, through Christ, destroying the curse of sin from His creation.
II. Jesus, as God the Son is the one who reconciles the creation to himself and therefore we owe Him our all (19-20)
II. Jesus, as God the Son is the one who reconciles the creation to himself and therefore we owe Him our all (19-20)
Apply: He did not have to choose to save us. He did not need us but as we sang this morning, we need Him. You owe him everything.
What does Paul say that we should give back?
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
“reasonable service” (KJV)
Live your life for Him
Make all your decisions for Him.
Your life is a sacrifice for Him.
POINT 3
21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds,
22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him,
23 if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.
III. The mark of the truly reconciled is continued faith, hope, and obedience to the Reconciler.
III. The mark of the truly reconciled is continued faith, hope, and obedience to the Reconciler.
Apply: Look at your own life, do you exhibit the evidence?
Do you shift from the hope of the Gospel?
If not, it is not to late, you can respond today
If so, praise God, that is your response, praise and thanksgiving/
