Blessed are the poor in Spirit

Blessed are the poor in Spirit

Rightly ordering our self-perception
The beginning of gratitude is humility
The Lord’s most precious gift, most costly in the incarnation, humility of the Son

The distinctive practice of Thanksgiving like a light in a dark place, a city on a hill

Unlike the world around us, we are thankful because we know the debt of gratitude we owe
Unlike the world around us, we are thankful even when the world says we aren’t supposed to be
We know we live in a broken and dark world that does not recognize or practice true gratitude when we consider

Prominent public displays of thanksgiving

Practice of public thanksgiving - excuse for over indulgence
High profile, celebration - rich famous and well dressed hosts and big name sponsors with individual vingnettes of what they are thankful for
High-jacked by the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys!
Black Friday - encroaches more and more, overshadowing Thanksgiving Day
Black Friday - encroaches more and more, overshadowing Thanksgiving Day

Into this darkness Jesus invites us to go, living lives of gratitude

A people who give thanks even when we have little
We give thanks when we have little
A people who live in gratitude in the face of adversity, hardship, suffering and even death
We give thanks in the face of adversity and even death
We give thanks on a daily basis, to the people around us
Shining lights
