Introduction
The First use of the law: the law as a mirror showing us our sin and our need for a saviour. The Second use of the law: the law as a restraint on society, like reins on a horse, the law of God restrains the evil in a society. The Third use of the law: the law as our teacher. The law teaches the believer how they are to live.
All Law reflects the lawgiver, therefore we must ask of each of the commandments found here: what does this command reveal about God’s nature?
The Simplicity and generality of the commands: as we approach the 10 commandments we see very broad laws and very brief laws. A quick look at New Zealand immigration laws will cause us to see the difference between that book of laws and the decalogue in front of us.
Thesis: The Lord alone is God, therefore only he is worthy of worship.
You- who is in mind here? the type of pronouns used in this sentence Shall have- possession—> what is meant by this phrase? No other gods- are we to assume that there indeed are other gods—> Before me- does this mean in rank? Summary—> a full explanation of the text What is being described here? (Selected Scriptures)
This God is exclusive. The claim of monotheism demands exclusivity. Yahweh says that you shall have no other gods, because he alone is god.
The Negative command is to have no other gods. The Positive command is that Yahweh alone must be your God.
What does it mean to worship another god, what would this have looked like in the time the command was given?
The gods we worship—> the rich young ruler Luke 18:18
The God we worship The One who reveals himself Father, Son, Spirit
We must know this God as he reveals himself, so that we love and trust him, rather than a counterfeit god.
