5:1 At first sight John seems to have moved to a fresh theme, that of faith and divine sonship, a view that is strengthened by John’s concentration on faith in the following verses. But the second part of the verse is still concerned with love, and it is probable that the first part of the verse should be understood as an introduction to a further thought about love; nevertheless, it introduces an idea which will be taken up more fully once the author has concluded his exposition of the place of love.
