Introduction:
Things that take you back: (after thanksgiving) Often times at thanksgiving, it is a time with family to go over memories of days past.
This year I drove a truck from my 1st year driving.
There are positive ways to look back on former days…today, however, we are going to look into a command that Jesus gave, that, if not taken seriously, keeps people from experiencing healing from past wounds.
In the apostles mind, this is a command that was so great that they asked for increased faith.
Be ready to forgive
Luke 17:1-4
Forgiveness is hard… unforgiveness and bitterness is like picking at a wound that prevents it from healing.
Healing can only occur once these things are let go of, but even at that, healing may take some time.
Detail what forgiveness is.
Forgiveness is a releasing of emotional guilt you place upon the other person.
It’s a choice.
It happens in the heart.
It’s not a release of responsibility or an absence of healthy boundaries.
Why must I be ready to forgive?

My intrinsic obligation to forgive
luke
It is an Obligation because it is COMMANDED
Notice that this command is applicable for EVERY ORDINARY BELIEVER.
Yes it is supernatural (it takes faith), but it is ordinary (even the believer with the smallest faith can do it).
Forgiving one another is not just for SUPER CHRISTIANS.
It doesn’t make you the bigger person, but an OBEDIENT person.
When we forgive we are simply doing what is our duty.
This is Jesus’ point in verses 7-10.
He describes a obedient slave.
He did his work in the field as he had been commanded.
Jesus asks if he deserves some special thanks or recognition just because he did what he was supposed to do.
The answer is no.
He simply did his duty.
It is INTRINSIC to christianity, because the forgiveness received by God and the forgiveness offered to others go hand in hand.
My Sin oh the bliss of this glorious thought.
My sin, not in part, but the whole, is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more.

why does vertical and horizontal forgiveness go hand in hand?

If someone says that they believe in Christ and yet they willingly harbor unforgiveness in their hearts, they are a walking contradiction.
