Philippians 4:4-9
Introduction
Rejoice
Gentleness
In 2 Cor. 10:1 Paul beseeches his readers by the ‘gentleness’ (epieikeia) of Christ, coupled with his ‘meekness’ (praÿtēs). epieikeia suggests the yielding of a judge, who, instead of demanding the exact penalty required by strict justice, gives way to circumstances which call for mercy.
Anxiety
Uneasy feeling of uncertainty, agitation, dread, or fear
In the Bible anxiety is frequently depicted as the common human reaction to stressful circumstances. Saul’s father was anxious about his lost donkeys, and then about Saul’s failure to return from looking for them (1 Sam. 9:5; 10:2). The psalmist confesses that anxiety is “great” within him (Ps. 94:19). Anxiety is portrayed in the Scripture as being inconsistent with trust in God.
19 In the multitude of my anxieties within me,
Your comforts delight my soul.
Psalm 127:2
2 It is vain for you to rise up early,
To sit up late,
To beat the bread of sorrows;
For so He gives His beloved sleep.
Proverbs 12:25
25 zAnxiety in the heart of man causes depression,
But aa good word makes it glad.
Jeremiah 17:7–8
7 “Blessed lis the man who trusts in the LORD,
And whose hope is the LORD.
8 For he shall be mlike a tree planted by the waters,
Which spreads out its roots by the river,
And will not 3fear when heat comes;
But its leaf will be green,
And will not be anxious in the year of drought,
Nor will cease from yielding fruit.
Matthew 6:25–34
25 “Therefore I say to you, ydo not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 zLook at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one 1cubit to his 2stature?
28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not 3arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But aseek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Mark 4:19
19 and the hcares of this world, ithe deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
Philippians 2:28
28 Therefore I sent him the more eagerly, that when you see him again you may rejoice, and I may be less sorrowful.
Philippians 4:6–7
6 iBe anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with jthanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and kthe peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
1 Peter 5:6–8
6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
8 Be 3sober, be 4vigilant; 5because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
19 In the multitude of my anxieties within me,
Your comforts delight my soul.
2 It is vain for you to rise up early,
To sit up late,
To beat the bread of sorrows;
For so He gives His beloved sleep.
