It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, And to sing praises unto thy name, O most High: To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, And thy faithfulness every night, Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery; Upon the harp with a solemn sound.
Introduction
Introduction
In American culture the time of year that is upon us causes us to pause and remember our blessings. It is a time of family gatherings, football games (losses many times for us LIons fans) and wonderful memories. Most of us have lived in this country for our entire life and although we may not feel “wealthy”, we are beyond blessed. If we were to take a survey of the entire globe we would quickly realize the standard of living and the freedoms we enjoy are unmatched. They are unique to our geographic location as well as our historic position. Of course these circumstances could change and in many ways they are changing. The America that once was is in many ways, no longer.

The main focal point of the message this morning is not the decline of our country and it’s values, values that were once centered on the Bible; The theme of the message this morning is…regardless of the decline in our circumstances we have much to be thankful for. God has and is good… all the time! Thankfulness is not just a theme of the season, it’s a common theme in all of the Bible.
The Psalmist reminds us “it is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD...” certainly he is worthy of our thanks.

I. We need to thank Him for his Salvation
I. We need to thank Him for his Salvation
It seems so basic that we don’t need to mention our salvation but we would be amiss if we failed to remind ourselves of God’s gift to us in the form of his sacrifice on Calvary.
Countless millions are trusting in religion to save them - baptism, church membership, financial giving
But the truth that Salvation can only be attained through Christ is enough to thank him for all eternity
Salvation is a gift - one cannot earn a gift
Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

II. We need to thank him for his Sovereignty
II. We need to thank him for his Sovereignty
We often feel as though things are out of control - but God is always in control
A. He is sovereign in his creation
A. He is sovereign in his creation
God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

To the chief Musician, A Song or Psalm. Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands: Sing forth the honour of his name: Make his praise glorious. Say unto God, How terrible art thou in thy works! Through the greatness of thy power shall thine enemies submit themselves unto thee. All the earth shall worship thee, And shall sing unto thee; they shall sing to thy name. Selah. Come and see the works of God: He is terrible in his doing toward the children of men. He turned the sea into dry land: They went through the flood on foot: There did we rejoice in him. He ruleth by his power for ever; His eyes behold the nations: Let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Selah. O bless our God, ye people, And make the voice of his praise to be heard: Which holdeth our soul in life, And suffereth not our feet to be moved. For thou, O God, hast proved us: Thou hast tried us, as silver is tried. Thou broughtest us into the net; Thou laidst affliction upon our loins. Thou hast caused men to ride over our heads; We went through fire and through water: But thou broughtest us out into a wealthy place. I will go into thy house with burnt offerings: I will pay thee my vows, Which my lips have uttered, And my mouth hath spoken, when I was in trouble. I will offer unto thee burnt sacrifices of fatlings, With the incense of rams; I will offer bullocks with goats. Selah. Come and hear, all ye that fear God, And I will declare what he hath done for my soul. I cried unto him with my mouth, And he was extolled with my tongue. If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear me: But verily God hath heard me; He hath attended to the voice of my prayer. Blessed be God, which hath not turned away my prayer, Nor his mercy from me.
Illustration - Jeff Bezoz now worth 100B - Man recently asked me if I was worried that certain men had so much money and control.
Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;
Acts
“...determined the times before appointed, and the bounds (boundaries) of their habitation...”

God is concerned with our physical, spiritual & emotional needs
A. His supply for our emotional needs

Definition: INFIRMITY, noun inferm'ity. [Latin infirmitas.]
1. An unsound or unhealthy state of the body; weakness; feebleness. Old age is subject to infirmities.
2. Weakness of mind; failing; fault; foible.
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.
B. His supply for our physical needs
B. His supply for our physical needs
Even in the wilderness through the disobedience of Israel- God provide manna from heaven, A cloud by day and fire by night
And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the Lord hath given you to eat.
C. His supply for our spiritual needs
C. His supply for our spiritual needs
physical provision is not sufficient for the child of God -
And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live.
When Satan tempted the Lord he pointed to earthly provision - physical means - but the Lord rebuked him
Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
Conclusion
Conclusion
Praise is so important that we are commanded to do it so our children can observe:
Give ear, O my people, to my law: Incline your ears to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old: Which we have heard and known, And our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, Shewing to the generation to come The praises of the Lord, and his strength, And his wonderful works that he hath done. For he established a testimony in Jacob, And appointed a law in Israel, Which he commanded our fathers, That they should make them known to their children: That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; Who should arise and declare them to their children: That they might set their hope in God, And not forget the works of God, But keep his commandments: And might not be as their fathers, A stubborn and rebellious generation; A generation that set not their heart aright, And whose spirit was not stedfast with God.
