For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
“Measure” = “Metron”
“For by the grace given to me I say”
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
Typically an easy answer ( - though whom we have received grace and apostleship…)
Amount given vs standard by which to measure ourselves. (quantity or instrument)

He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”
Matthew 17:20
Amount given or Measure? Measure!
[Is there a recognition of grace here? how does faith relate? Paul calls himself the chief of all sinners.
For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
Grace [Unmerited favor] given to me. Paul makes a claim to the Grace given him. He uses his Grace as the authority and support for what he’s about to say next.
So to me that seems significant. What specifically is the Grace given Paul?
Typically an easy answer ( - though whom we have received grace and apostleship…)
For God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.
Paul’s appeal in 12:1 for us to live as living sacrifices is based on the mercies of God.
How does God have mercy on us? By his Grace.
--------------
Specifically, Paul speaks of God’s Mercy and Grace given him in his writing to Timothy:
though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
Paul says that his life is to be an example to us.
(Paul’s sober judgement, possibly)
[unbelief/no faith] vs. [belief/faith]
Where sin increased, grace increased more. (ROM5:20)
The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.
[example of.... grace!]
Paul’s assessment of himself is clear throughout his writing. He deserved the wrath of God. Instead, God showed him Mercy.
Jesus came to save sinners. BUT, Paul received mercy for another reason as well… he was called to be an apostle; the Apostle of Grace.
what was the grace given Paul?
But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.
assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for you,
The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. turns out he answers this for us:
KJV
This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.
But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.
1) [DISPLAY] his [PATIENCE/LONGSUFFERING]
2) To Paul, [FIRST] as a [PATTERN] — outline or sketch.
A Prototype. (In me first!) Apostle of Grace / Apostle of Faith.
Consider .
But some believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees rose up and said, “It is necessary to circumcise them and to order them to keep the law of Moses.”
Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.
Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.
Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.
It was not because we do not have that right, but to give you in ourselves an example to imitate.
relate to 12:3
1 Tim 1:16

Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,
Pattern concerning Christ’s patience with us (and his longsuffering); not desiring that any should perish (according to John).
(Being a follower of Christ does not make you better than others.)
Paul, in fact, specifically calls himself the least of the Apostles in . Because he persecuted the Church. He deserved God’s wrath.

According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it.
B:
But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.
Paul explains his work in another way to the Corinthians that sheds light on our verse:
According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it.
Let each one take care how he builds upon it.
He seems here in writing to the corinthians to be concerned with our building on the foundation he laid in proclaiming the Gospel of Grace. The master builder lays the foundation, the Corinthians and we build upon it.
Admonishment to follow his pattern with care. Corollary is that its easy to be careless. [Architect change orders. (put a pool over here.)] Simply follow the plan!
Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise.
1 Cor
So let no one boast in men. For all things are yours,
1 Cor 3:
So let no one boast in men. For all things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours,
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
Here is , Paul lays out the renewed mind. Here is what a renewed mind looks like:
Thinks with sober judgement about ourselves, especially in our relationship to others.
And on and on...
