The Promise:
Early on God promised Israel that in due time he would sent them a Leader unlike any other.
A Leader upon who the Spirit of God would rest on like it has never rested on anyone else.
That Spirit will give Him Wisdom above all, understanding above all, council above all, might above all, knowledge above all and holiness above all.
A King who will reign above all, execute judgment above all, be righteous above all and who will singlehandedly have the power to save God’s people.
This annointed future leader was called the Messiah - “annointed one” in Hebrew and is called Christos in Greek = Christ.
Why it matters
The Christos of Jesus is the single most important issue surrounding Him.
There is nothing controversial or special about Jesus.
But when you add the messianic claim, everything changes.
All scholar athiest’s agree on the historicity of a man names Jesus, all Jews agree on the existence of a man named Jesus.
All of Rome testified to the trial of a man named Jesus.
But that is not the case to Jesus, the Christ - because Jesus can easily be taken as fact, But Jesus, the Christ is of faith.
You are the one the holy scriptures testified about.
you are the one the prophets fortold would come.
you are the one upon the spirit will rest in power.
you are the one who will save Gods people from their sins.
The Messiah was the one who would end the dispensation of the OC and usher in a new way of worship.
what powerful texts.
what mighty prophecy.
what mighty promises.
what great hope.
This is what Christmas is all about.
Central to Christmas is the word Christ.
Its not Jesusmass - its Christmass - mass just means gathering and its object is the Christ.
opening verse to Christmas story:
Jesus began his ministry by publicly stating that he is the fulfilment of every messianic prophecy.
Did you get all that?
- Good news to the poor, liberty to the captives, sight to the blind, liberty to oppressed, God’s unmerited favor (grace).
Good news to the poor, liberty to the captives, sight to the blind, liberty to oppressed, God’s unmerited favor (grace).
This title is the basis for his crusifixion.
It was his claim to be christ that infuriated the religious leaders.
Not only is Christ central to Christmas, but its central to the Christian Faith - once again notice we are not called Jesusians , but Christians.

The bible exists not to be your pick me up, but to provide you will evidence of faith that Jesus is the Christ.
If you believe in Jesus, but not in his Christness - you are not saved.

The Never Ending Christmas Message
Jesus is not the christ at Christmas only, He is Christ all the time.
And so yes the message that needs to be preached at Christmas is not how to be a better person or any-other self help nonsense, the message should be that Jesus, that baby in a manger, He is the Christ.
And that is the message the church needs to preach all the time.
