What is it?
What is it?
You should have it. If you have an active life with God. You should have it.
The H.S. produces…makes to come forth.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
We can’t ignore the list. Right behind love is joy.

What is it?
Huffington post did a great job of telling us what it is not
Joy in most people’s minds is synonymous with pleasure. However, joy is not pleasure. Pleasure is a rather short-term, short-lived emotion; it appears in flashes, coming and going fairly quickly. Joy cannot be bought or sought externally and does not give instant gratification.
Joy is also not contentment. Many of us think we’ve come to a place of joy when we feel momentary peace or simply just a lack of trauma-drama in our lives. Yet merely settling for a life that is ‘good enough’ or ‘okay,’ but not ‘great,’ is not joy.
Pleasure and contentment can also bring their opposites: displeasure and discontentment. These are fleeting and complacent emotions which, unfortunately, we confuse with joy much of the time. - Huffington Post
Point: If you’ve been thinking it’s any of these things, you’ve got it wrong!
Christian joy is a good feeling in the soul, produced by the Holy Spirit, as he causes us to see the beauty of Christ in the word and in the world. - John Piper
It belongs and comes from only the supernatural realm
Here’s the question that I want you to ask yourself…do you have all the joy you need?

IF your answer is “no”, go get some more!
The antonym of joy is...agony, pain, misery, torture

Now, don’t let the pendulum swing to far. Joy is not happiness. If that were the case, would’ve been edited out.
2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,
Joy doesn’t equal Happiness.
Happiness is predicated on what’s going on around you.
: What you get for Christmas
: What kind of day you have at work
: If you get a good bonus
: Purchase of a new car
: Some people get “happy” in church but it’s based on what’s said and a state of euphoria that you end up end because of what was said.
Joy comes because of your proximity to Him!
How do you get the gift? Highlight vs. 11
11 You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Ps 16
Now, LISTEN how it is that David process arriving here.

1 Preserve me, O God, for in You I put my trust. 2 O my soul, you have said to the Lord, “You are my Lord, My goodness is nothing apart from You.” 3 As for the saints who are on the earth, “They are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight.” 4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied who hasten after another god; Their drink offerings of blood I will not offer, Nor take up their names on my lips. 5 O Lord, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You maintain my lot. 6 The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; Yes, I have a good inheritance. 7 I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel; My heart also instructs me in the night seasons. 8 I have set the Lord always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope. 10 For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. 11 You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
You will show me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;

The story of the man who had lost his keys and he was standing at the edge of the street right underneath a street lamp looking for his keys. A neighbor saw him and walked over to help. After a few minutes he said to him, “exactly where was it you dropped your keys?” He says well I was in my house. He says well then why are you looking out here? He says because the lights are better out here. It is a truth that we have known for a long time ... you will never find what you are looking for unless you look in the right place. Many people today are looking for God but they are looking for Him in all the wrong places.

App: The beauty is that this psalm isn’t just for a specific situation, but wherever and whoever and for whatever you need joy for!
Today’s take away…If you forget everything else: David knows there only one that can give him what he needs

Ill: Bill Gates/Warren Buffett aren’t leaving their children their wealth. OR gay son came out of the closet and mother disinherited her child.
David is saying, it doesn’t matter what my father does, You’ve already hooked me up!
And since I know He’s hooking me up...
8 I have set the Lord always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope.
This entire time we’ve been looking at this gift…the real ability to have joy.
11 You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Ps 16:11
The same One who orders your steps is really ordering your life. Which means, whatever happens to you as you’re stepping on the “path of life” you can still have joy.

A Handbook on the Book of Psalms Psalm 16:11
Presence (Hebrew “face”) and right hand are used synonymously, meaning close presence, companionship, care, protection. RSV in thy right hand means that God holds in his right hand gifts or blessings that will bring eternal pleasure to the psalmist. It seems better, however, to understand the Hebrew to mean “at your right hand,” that is, “close to you,” parallel with “in your presence” in the preceding line. In many passages “the right hand” is specifically the place of privilege and honor (see 45:9; 110:1).
In His presence there is a present and there are presents!!

“joy” brings “joy” (gladness) SEM-HA translated “joy”and “joy” NA-IM translated “pleasure”
Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon 5273 נָעִים, נָעִים
AV translates as “pleasant” eight times, “pleasures” twice, “sweet” twice, and “sweet thing” once. 1 pleasant, delightful, sweet, lovely, agreeable. 1A delightful. 1B lovely, beautiful (physical). 2 singing, sweetly sounding, musical.
If I were to boil this entire Psalm down, David is saying the resource of joy, comes from the source of the Joy-Giver
If I get to Him, He has what I want!
11 You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Inquiring minds want to know…what’s at His right hand. Clearly, you can only experinece whatever is there by getting to where He is.
8 My soul follows close behind You; Your right hand upholds me.
10 Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me.
13 For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand, Saying to you, ‘Fear not, I will help you.’

8 The Lord has sworn by His right hand And by the arm of His strength: “Surely I will no longer give your grain As food for your enemies; And the sons of the foreigner shall not drink your new wine, For which you have labored.
1 Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! For He has done marvelous things; His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory.
ps 98.1
6 “Your right hand, O Lord, has become glorious in power; Your right hand, O Lord, has dashed the enemy in pieces.
If I hang out with Him, I get joy AND MORE!!!!!!!

The last blackout July 1977. The city was out but the Statue of Liberty remained lit.
It didn’t make sense, how can the city be dark but the the statue that sits in the harbour of the city still have power.
It was discovered that she was connected to New Jersey’s power supply…so when every thing else went black, because she wasn’t connected to the same supply, she could keep her light shining.
App: That’s all I’m trying to tell you about joy. Your joy isn’t doesn’t come from what’s going on around you, but rather
