I’m here because I’m sorry.
I’m here because I’m sorry.
We come together to praise God. We come together for fellowship. Nonetheless we come together to worship God for what he has done, what he his doing and what he is going to do. The bible tells me that all have sinned, therefore all of us need grace and mercy. I am so thankful for God’s grace and mercy. This is why I worship, even though I felt like giving up, and I felt like giving in. When my name was tarnished and I became no longer as perfect as you wanted to me be. Here’s your why though, I worship because I am not perfect! I worship because I am not where I need to be and I need God’s help.
Background:
David has written a psalm to embody his pain and suffering for sleeping with another man’s wife.
explains that David inquired about the woman, sleeps with the woman, she becomes pregnant and David does not stop there. His conspiring leads him to setting up her husband to die. I want you to think about what his contrition of heart looks like. I want you to think about what his repentance looks like?
David’s sin does not lead him to isolation, it does not lead him to losing his calling but it leads him to worship!
This worship that David is experiencing is repentant worship. He is utterly distraught at the decisions he has made. He begins this prayer for pardon with “Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions.”
David is asking for grace according to the loyal love of God. Worship says that I am loyal to God through my imperfections because he is loyal through my inconsistency.
I worship because I know I am not perfect and God continues to blot out my transgressions despite the fact that I am unworthy.
Understand we worship a God that is generous in love.
David is pleading with God that he wipe out his bad record and scrub away his guilt.
We are worshipping God and thankful to him because he cleaned us up. I enter the sanctuary with thankfulness because of his greatness.
David makes a peculiar statement in this text in which he says “For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me”. In other words David says I know I messed up, my sins are literally staring me in the face. This is why worship is important because no matter how in shambles my life might be I can still worship him!
We have to stop restricting worship to what happens in church on Sunday. The aspect of worship carried a broader aspect in the old testament that we can learn from. Typically they offered worship in the home as well as the temple several times a day. Worship was not restricted to one day. It is interesting we put worship in a box that belongs on Sunday but we want blessings everyday!
Worship defined means the praise, adoration and reverence of God, both in public and private. It is a celebration of the worthiness of God, by which honour is given to his name.
Sometimes I worship because I am thankful, but right now David is worshipping because he is remorseful and although he is unworthy God still sees fit to forgive him.
Verse 4 presents an interesting idea. Glancing it initially I asked my self what about the trauma he implemented to Uriah and Bathsheba’s life, but David learns a valuable lesson that regardless who is affected by our sin, God is the ultimate target of our sin.
Even Joseph in the midst of Potiphar stated in “How then could I do this great evil and sin against God”.
David states “Against you, you only, I have sinned and done what is evil in Your sight”.
Repentance is two part. Understand how dirty your closet is, understanding those secrets that you hold deep down in your hide that you are ashamed to talk about God knows and grace makes space for those issues too.
Man has to recognize his sin.
Man has to recognize what grace is, even if no one else treats him like God’s grace is existent.
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
Understand how David addresses God, He addresses him at Elohim or creator and judge of this world. The only one that has to power to create new beginnings out of terrible situations.
True repentant worship desires to be clean as David cries out wash me thoroughly and cleanse me. The difference between the contrite and hypocrite according to Spurgeon is the hypocrite is content if his garments be washed; but the true suppliant cries, ‘wash me’.
The first step is contrition in repentance. David shows he is contrite and the next step is confession of sin. Confession is not just verbalizing your shortcomings but it is saying God I can not do this alone.
I am aware of my sin, and I am aware that it has me out of step with God. “I have been out of step with you for a long time”. Understand that sin in out of the mold of the being and the will of God. Understand that sins may be private to the eyes of friends and family but God is always hurt the worst at the expense of our sin.
You ask why I worship, You ask why I praise his Holy name because I know how unworthy I am and how fortunate I am to have God as my help. Sin is serious because as David states “and in sin my mother conceived me”. Understand that we are surrounded by temptation and we can not overcome sin without the help of God.
I Worship Him Because He Has Cleansed Me Inside Out
I Worship Him Because He Has Cleansed Me Inside Out
God desires us to be right from the inside out.
He who walks with integrity, and works righteousness, and speaks truth in his heart.
True worship comes from a true heart that acknowledges imperfections and realizes we need God’s help.
I worship God because despite my past he purged me. I worship God because despite my filth he decided to wash me.
I ask God to create in me a clean heart. Even though we are searching for forgiveness we have to be interested in more than that when it comes to God. He does not just make us new because our sin stinks, he hopes that our new life will allow us to live our life in a new way.
David ask that God restore unto him the joy of His salvation. He desires to be forgiven, but past that he desires to walk again hand in hand with his Creator.
Repentant worship does not even stop there! Now that I understand my weakness, now that I understand where I need help God please uphold me or preserve me from falling!
and in the wilderness where you saw how the LORD your God carried you, just as a man carries his son, in all the way which you have walked until you came to this place.'
I worship God because he restored me, I worship God because he provided me with refuge when no one else would. I worship God because he carried me when I could not walk on my own. He carried me to this place, so I could make it to the promise land. This is why I worship.
