Why Death?

Romans 6:23 NKJV
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23
Why aren’t the wages of sin “a stern talking to”? Or “a gentle slap on the wrist?” Why are the wages of sin, death?

23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Why aren’t the wages of sin “a stern talking to”? Or “a gentle slap on the wrist?” Why are the wages of sin, death?
Humans are different from angels
Revelation 12:3–4 NKJV
And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads. His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to give birth, to devour her Child as soon as it was born.
Here, the angels clearly sinned by choosing to fall with Satan, yet they didn’t die.

3 And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads. 4 His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to give birth, to devour her Child as soon as it was born.

Here, the angels clearly sinned by choosing to fall with Satan, yet they didn’t die.
2. Humans can’t live apart from God.
John 6:53 NKJV
Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.

53 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.

6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

John 14:6 NKJV
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
and of course,

2 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,

8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

9 Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”

and of course,
53 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.
and of course,
2. God wanted us to have the same choice the angels did. But how?
The New King James Version. (1982). (Jn 6:53). Nashville: Thomas Nelson.2. God wanted us to have the same choice the angels did. But how?
Commandments!

8 But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead. 9 I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died.

Romans 7:8 NKJV
But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead.
There is no sin without a commandment.
There is no sin without a commandment.
God gave us commandments for NO REASON, except to choose Him. Commandments present a choice. Without a commandment, there’s no choice.
He had to hide the fact that we would instantly die, so by placing us in a body, we could still die spiritually, like we would have in heaven, but still exist.
Without our body, we’d be nothing but spirit, so dying spiritually, would be the end of our existence.
4. Sin is the absence of God

14 For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, 15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, 16 and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.

8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

9 Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”

Genesis 3:8 NKJV
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
5. Since sin is the absence of God, it kills us, because we cannot live apart from Him.
5. Since sin is the absence of God, it kills us, because we cannot live apart from Him.

2 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,

Ephesians 2:1 NKJV
And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins,

8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

9 Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”

6. Jesus solved this problem.
Ephesians 2:14 NKJV
For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation,
Ephesians 2:14–16 NKJV
For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.
It is our duty to walk in moment-to-moment repentance. On the cross, Jesus purchased for you, the ability to repent.
