Man, I have a problem!
Man, I have a problem!
Don’t we all have problems at times, we will turn to family or friends to listen to us, to ask them for help. . . (expand)
There is one problem and if it is not dealt with it has eternal consequences and that problem is sin
2 But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.
I
Our problem not only separated us from God we were considered dead.
1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,
1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,
we were separated; we were dead, we were excluded
18 being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart; 19 and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.
and were even handed over
28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper,
ROm1:
Sin is a serious problem and Jesus is the solution to the sin problem. Though some of this stuff we cover today maybe basic, but the basics need to be rooted in us so we can be prepared, biblically to share with others.
Sin is missing the mark. What mark? God’s mark, God’s standard for God’s people.
Sin impacts those around us, but first it impacts you and your place in eternity.
There are several types of sin.
SINS OF COMMISSION
This is doing what God tells us wrong (breaking a commandment) - insert an example
1
4 Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.
SINS OF OMISSION
Failing to do the right thing when we know the right thing to do (insert an example)
14 Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.
17 Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.
SINS OF CONSCIENCE
Paul spoke of this type of sin in . starts with accepting one who is not as you are, maybe not as strong, by not judging them, not stumbling them.
23 But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin.
These sins can eat away at you like they did David.
3 When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away Through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. Selah.
for we also know that sin has the price of death too
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Death that ends with fire.
8 “But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
Rev21:
As hard as it maybe to hear, to discuss, or to bring to someone’s attention, it is eternally necessary that the sin problem be addressed.
I. God’s nature and the Sin Problem
I. God’s nature and the Sin Problem
God’s nature is God is Holy.
9 “Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
God hides His face from the sinful as mentioned in Isa59:2 and because of His holiness He will not dwell with sin.
4 For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness; No evil dwells with You. 5 The boastful shall not stand before Your eyes; You hate all who do iniquity. 6 You destroy those who speak falsehood; The Lord abhors the man of bloodshed and deceit.
God’s nature is He is just
Sin will be judged, and judged by the Word of God. God had spoken regarding acceptable sacrifices, offerings to Him and there were dire results for Aaron’s sons for not doing things right.
1 Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective firepans, and after putting fire in them, placed incense on it and offered strange fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them. 2 And fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.
3 Then Moses said to Aaron, “It is what the Lord spoke, saying, ‘By those who come near Me I will be treated as holy, And before all the people I will be honored.’ ” So Aaron, therefore, kept silent.
He is holy and has told them, and tells us what is acceptable, so God is just in keeping His Word.
Moses even learned about not doing what God says and it cost him too.
12 But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you have not believed Me, to treat Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.”
Moses was told to speak to the rock (Num20:8) but Moses struck the rock and implied God was mad (Num20:10-11)
The results were Moses was not able to lead the people into the promised land and only got to look at it from a mountain top.
Man has a terrible predicament.
As mentioned our sins separate us from God (Isa59:2)
Sin separates us from God (Isa59:2)
God is Holy and must be regarded as holy (Psm5:4-6)
But we all sin.
God is just
Sin is a terrible thing
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
God’s nature is holy, it is just and sin will be punished, the point is are you ready for the punishmen?
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
That death is the second death; eternal damnation as mentioned in Rev21:8.
You are not murderers,
Maybe your sins may not be many, but one sin brings judgment
10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.
We cannot bridge the gap between Holy/Just God and our sinful nature, Jesus is the way to forgiveness of sins.
II: Jesus, the way to forgiveness of sins
II: Jesus, the way to forgiveness of sins
God’s plan to save sinful man: That plan is Jesus.
10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
Jesus is God’s answer to reconcile sinful man to Holy and just God.
It was costly, it was painful, it was acceptable and it was pleasing to God.
5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. 6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.
Pierced, crushed, chastened, scourged and takes on all sin on Himself. that is what Isaiah spoke of regarding the Christ 700 years before.
God’s plan made His own son to be the perfect offering to take care of the sin problem
10 But the Lord was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand. 11 As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, And He will divide the booty with the strong; Because He poured out Himself to death, And was numbered with the transgressors; Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, And interceded for the transgressors.
He redeemed us, and set us free.
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed,
We have forgiveness by the very blood of Christ.
7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace
According to God’s riches of grace! By God’s actions through the Christ He:
Preserves His holiness, for our sins have been washed away.
Maintains His justice, for Jesus took on the punishment of sin on Himself
God is merciful and graceful because He loves us
Jesus is the way to forgiveness, you have to receive it, so let’s address that next.
III. Receiving Jesus way to forgiveness
III. Receiving Jesus way to forgiveness
Have have the commission given to the Apostles by Jesus and recorded for us.
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.
We have the good news that is available to all, and today we are God’s means of spreading it. Jesus is the way
36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.”
What God did, he did through Jesus.
12 “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”
Think about Jesus for a moment
He promised to go away and send help (Jn16:7; Jn14:16)
He reminded them of the help coming (Act1:5)
The help promised came (Act2:3-4)
Because of the help promised that came hearts were convicted
37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?”
(Expand on Act2, the progression to the pierced hearts) - study, prepare for this
Some 50 days after the crucifixion of Christ He gave the means for salvation, a way for the remission of sins.
"Straightening up, Jesus said to her, 'Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?' She said, 'No one, Lord,' and Jesus said, 'I do not condemn you either. Go, from now on sin no more.'" Jn8:10-11 (NASB)
Jesus said go and sin no more, but before that He said I do not condemn you. That is pretty significant but this is not the first time He has said something like that either.
"For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.: Jn3:17-18 (NASB)
When we start to grasp that Jesus does not want to condemn us, but wants to save us. Even when we fall short, then we want to change our life habits and go and sin no more. No more lifestyle of sin. No more choosing things we know are against what God says, but choosing the things that are pleasing to Him.
For we need to remember.
"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Rom8:1 (NASB)
So go today know if you are Christs that you are not condemned and sin no moew, pierced hearts, what can they do? What can anyone do at this point. Man is in need of salvation, in need of redemption
38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Peter preached (they heard); they believed evidenced by the question (v.37) they were told to repent and be baptized and they did it
Act
41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls.
Jesus as the way added them.
47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.
Paul furthered it by reminding them of confessing Jesus. Even Jesus spoke of that, so let me give you both.
32 “Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven.
Confessing Jesus, believing in Jesus, hearing the Good News about Jesus, repenting all go along with your faith.
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
You want forgiveness of sins, you have the answer, the answer is Jesus and you receive Jesus in the manner laid out in the scripture
27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
So if you have not been clothed in Christ, the reality is your sin problem is still a problem and the solution is before you. The solution is Jesus is the way to be reconciled to Holy and just God.
Jesus told us that He is the way.
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
Come to Jesus, His way for the sin problem does not have to keep you.
