29. RICHES AND THE CHRISTIAN

I. THE FALSE RICHESvv.

A. Riches—vv. . Man has always been interested in money. It is not wrong to have money, but to love it is a sin.

B. Reality—v. . Being rich is not what you have but enjoying what you have. Wanting things can lead to coveting, and coveting is breaking the tenth commandment (). Coveting is a: (1) deceptive sin, (2) destructive sin, and a (3) damning sin.

II. THE FOOLISH REASONINGvv.

A. The man’s success—vv. . He had very good crops. He was successful in planning and preparing the right crops.

B. The man’s selfishness—vv. . Note in these verses that the personal pronouns I and my appear eleven times. Nothing is said of helping others, or of God. He seemed to have no interest in God or spiritual things. He gained the world, but, in the end, he lost his soul ().

III. THE FINAL RESULTSvv.

A. Death—v. . Notice that God calls him a fool. We cannot take our money with us when we die (). We can send it ahead by giving it to God.

B. Deception—v. . “Yes, every man is a fool who gets rich on earth but not in heaven” (LB). If we have Christ, we are rich. We have a heavenly home. Note these words, “Some rich people are poor, and some poor people have great wealth” ( LB).

IV. THE FAITHFUL RELIANCEvv.

A. Worry—vv. . Don’t worry about what you will eat and wear or where you will live. God will care for you in these matters. This does not mean that we should be lazy and not work.

B. Wonder—v. . The wonder of how God cares for the birds. We are more important than the birds. He will care for us.

C. Worthless—vv. . Does worrying about something help the problem? Of course not. So why worry? Worry only makes things worse. Worry is doubting God. Worry is sin.

V. THE FATHER’S RESOURCESvv.

A. Flowers—v. . God gives beauty to the flowers. All Solomon’s riches could not match the beauty of the flowers.

B. Faith—vv. . If we trust God, He will meet our needs. See . We trust Him to help us (, ).

C. Faithfulness—v. . If we are faithful to Him, He will be faithful to us.
