Matthew 22:37–39
Matthew 22:37–39
Jesus replied, “ ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
Scripture teaches believers to love God and shows how such love should be expressed in worship and practical service.
Believers’ response to God’s love
We love each other because he loved us first.
“The Lord did not set his heart on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other nations, for you were the smallest of all nations! Rather, it was simply that the Lord loves you, and he was keeping the oath he had sworn to your ancestors. That is why the Lord rescued you with such a strong hand from your slavery and from the oppressive hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.
I love the Lord because he hears my voice
and my prayer for mercy.
But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)
This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.
Love for God is commanded
And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.
“And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you? He requires only that you fear the Lord your God, and live in a way that pleases him, and love him and serve him with all your heart and soul.
“You must love the Lord your God and always obey his requirements, decrees, regulations, and commands.
But be very careful to obey all the commands and the instructions that Moses gave to you. Love the Lord your God, walk in all his ways, obey his commands, hold firmly to him, and serve him with all your heart and all your soul.”
Loving God involves loving Jesus Christ
Jesus told them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, because I have come to you from God. I am not here on my own, but he sent me.
Anyone who hates me also hates my Father.
Expressing love for God
Delight in worship and in God’s house
The one thing I ask of the Lord—
the thing I seek most—
is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
delighting in the Lord’s perfections
and meditating in his Temple.
I love your sanctuary, Lord,
the place where your glorious presence dwells.
There I will go to the altar of God,
to God—the source of all my joy.
I will praise you with my harp,
O God, my God!
They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity—all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.
Love for God’s word
Oh, how I love your instructions!
I think about them all day long.
But they delight in the law of the Lord,
meditating on it day and night.
The instructions of the Lord are perfect,
reviving the soul.
The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy,
making wise the simple.
The commandments of the Lord are right,
bringing joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are clear,
giving insight for living.
When I discovered your words, I devoured them.
They are my joy and my heart’s delight,
for I bear your name,
O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies.
Your instructions are more valuable to me
than millions in gold and silver.
The blessings of loving God
“If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.
Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them.
for the Father himself loves you dearly because you love me and believe that I came from God.
You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy.
In conclusion:
Examples of love for God and Jesus Christ
I love you, Lord;
you are my strength.
Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
“Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.”
“Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said.
For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for him and how you have shown your love to him by caring for other believers, as you still do.
LOVE a burning stream
I compare my Lord’s heart with a volcano constantly streaming with the burning lava of love. Oh, that my soul could but get that stream poured into it, to set the whole of my nature on fire, and consume me in the flames and torrent of love
