Introduction
Advent - coming
A season of remembrance and anticipation
Series - Who is Jesus? The object of our anticipation
Last week,
John 1
Divinity
Touched on incarnation
Today,
Hebrews 2
Why the incarnation? ...
Our text for today is 2:10-18
Scripture reading included vss. 5-9
These verses serve as an introduction to the main text so lets make a couple observations from them.
Observations from verses 5-9
God is able to place all things in subjection (8)
Verses 5-8 refer to mankind generally
Verses 5-8 teach of the special relationship of God toward mankind
Verse 9 introduces Jesus as Man and His death for “everyone”

Hebrews 2:10 ESV
10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.
“for” connects this passage to Jesus “tasting death for eeveryone” in verse 9
“it was fitting” Jesus’ death
“for whom and by whom all things exist” Jesus as creator
“everyone” in verse 9 is specified here as “sons”
This points to Jesus death being for everyone who is a son
“founder” Jesus was given flesh and allowed to die and this makes Him, as the founder of Salvation “perfect”
First point:
I. Jesus is able to be the perfect founder of salvation through His death in the flesh (10)
How is Jesus made perfect? I thought He was already perfect.
He is made a perfect founder of Salvation because he has been made man
the next verses expand on this idea.
Hebrews 2:11 ESV
11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers,
Both Jesus and his siblings (the church) are of one origin (source)
The sanctifier and ones being sanctifies share an origin
this is consistent with OT
Hebrews 2:12 ESV
12 saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.”
Hebrews 2:13 ESV
13 And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.”
II. Jesus, as a man, can rightly call us siblings (11-13)
As a brother or sister in Christ you can be confident that Jesus will sanctify you (vs. 11)
Explain sanctification - to be made holy
Hebrews 2:14 ESV
14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,
Hebrews 2:15 ESV
15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
III. It was necessary of Jesus to be man to defeat the enemy and deliver from death (14-15)
Implications
Satan is defeated and we don’t have to fear him
Death is defeated so it is no longer something to be feared
This frees us not just from sin and death but to life and godliness
Hebrews 2:16 ESV
16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham.
Hebrews 2:17 ESV
17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
Hebrews 2:18 ESV
18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
IV. Jesus is perfected in being the founder of salvation by being a high priest that lives the condition of man and is able to die in our stead (16-18)
A priest serves in a few roles
As a mediator
Jesus is the perfect mediator because he understands the human condition
As the one who sheds blood to cover sin
However, Jesus makes “propitiation”
