1 Corinthians 15:3-4
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
I. According to the scriptures
A. Verse 3 first importance
1. Primary focus of what and whose we are
2. Christ died according to the scriptures, not by accident, In God’s plan and purpose
3. He was buried, gone and dead, died,
4. He was raised, according to the scriptures, not by accident, In God’s plan and purpose
II. The Lord’s Supper has its roots in Passover
A. It was celebrated once a year
Exodus 12:1-11
1 Now the Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt,
2 “This month shall be the beginning of months for you; it is our new beginning time it is to be the first month of the year to you. It is our New Year ……happy new year! Celebrate!
3 “Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying, ‘On the tenth of this month they are each one to take a lamb for themselves, according to their fathers’ households, a lamb for each household. It is our feast time, with those in our family, how many have great meals waiting for me to finish?
4 ‘Now if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his neighbor nearest to his house are to take one according to the number of persons in them; according to what each man should eat, you are to divide the lamb. We are to share and who can not afford to feast, and with our neighbors
5 ‘Your lamb shall be an unblemished male a year old; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. God insists “Our best” is what is sacrificed for us for our behalf
6 ‘You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel is to kill it at twilight. We celebrate it as a community, with those in the family of God
7 ‘Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. We are identified to the world by the blood of the Passover Lamb Jesus, We are a marked people, our actions, We are separated by those actions, so they would afterward remember that they were saved by blood
8 ‘They shall eat the flesh that same night, roasted with fire, and they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. We sacrifice and feast on the lamb that was slain, unleavened bread, we do not give sin a chance to rise in us, a meal in haste, , the bitter herbs remind us of the pain and suffering that was endured from the bondage, so we remember that we do not wish to go back to it
9 ‘Do not eat any of it raw or boiled at all with water, but rather roasted with fire, both its head and its legs along with its entrails. The sacrifice must be complete, must be consumed fully
10 ‘And you shall not leave any of it over until morning, but whatever is left of it until morning, you shall burn with fire. Christ sacrifice was complete, he gave it all
11 ‘Now you shall eat it in this manner: with your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste—it is the Lord’s Passover. we are to be fully dressed for the journey, read to go at all times
B. Christ is our Passover who is sacrificed for us,
Revelation 19:7-9
7 “Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready.”
8 It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.
9 Then he said to me, “Write, ‘Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.’ ” And he said to me, “These are true words of God.”
C. We have the privilege of enjoying the Lord’s Supper (scriptures we use)
1 Corinthians 11:23-29
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread;
24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.
28 But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
29 For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly.
