Think about a good friend that you haven't seen in years. Imagine that friend is coming for Christmas dinner. How would you get ready? Would you clean the house? Set the table? Prepare your favourite foods? If they couldn't arrive until late, you'd likely leave a light on. Perhaps, you'd even stay up waiting for them? In Luke 12, Jesus tells of a servant who stays up all night, leaving a lamp burning, waiting for his Master's return. May we resemble this servant.

 Whitehorse Baptist Church "ADVENT ACCORDING TO LUKE" "GET READY FOR THE LORD" (LUKE 12:35-40) OUTLINE STYLE: INDUCTIVE DEVELOPMENT INTRODUCTION: 1. (SLIDE 1) MONOGLOGUE: "LEAVING THE LAMP ON" 2. SERIES INTRO 3. (SLIDE 2) MESSAGE INTRO TEACHING: 4. (SLIDE 3-4) LUKE 12:35-40 5. (SLIDE 5) THE SERVANT'S BENEFIT a) First Century Mindset: Servants were a normal part of life. i) Struggling financially, work was tough to find, no social assistance...) ii) Servanthood was a great option! (Shelter, clothing, 3 square meals!) b) (SLIDE 6) We're Servants: When we give our lives to Jesus, we enter into servanthood, but receive many blessings through the Holy Spirit. 6. (SLIDE 7) THE SERVANT'S READINESS a) Two Types: (1) Temporarily Ready or (2) Always Ready i) All is revealed when the Master is away. (His service is temporary.) ii) Into the 3rd watch, will the servant stay faithful, leaving the lamp on? b) (SLIDE 8) Our Readiness: Are We Ready? i) Is our light on, dressed for action, waiting for His return? 7. (SLIDE 9) THE SERVANT'S REWARD (The Future WHY?) a) Imagine the servant's surprise when the Master returns... i) ...removing his royal attire, changing into a servant's garments. ii) ...seating the servant, waiting on him as if the servant is royalty. Ø Imagine the servant's thankfulness for staying faithful! b) (SLIDE 10) This is the Christian story! (Our Future WHY?) i) Tangibly, before communion, washing the disciples feet. Ø The Master become truly did become a servant! ii) Theologically, Paul to the Roman Church. (Rm. 8:15-17) 8. (SLIDE 11) THE SERVANT'S LAMP (The Present WHY?) a) What does the Bible reveal to us about light? (Our Lamp, His Light!) i) Jesus said... Ø "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (Jn. 8:12) ii) (SLIDE 12) But Jesus also said that we... Ø “...are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." (Mt. 5:14-16) APPLICATION: Ask for lights to be turned off. 9. (SLIDE 13) WE'RE GETTING READY (OUR LAMPS ARE LIT!) a) Our Lamps must stay lit! (So His light can shine!) i) WBC is all about letting our light shine! WBC is ready for Jesus! Ø CHRISTMAS: If Jesus comes back this Christmas, we want to do everything we can to have our lamp on and shining bright! o If He doesn't return this Christmas, then we're still going to have the light on to proclaim the Gospel to our city! • Candlelight Concert, Youth Christmas Party, One Starry Night, Christmas Eve Service Ø (SLIDE 14) 2018: Celebration Sunday at the Arts Centre o Next Series: "How I Met Jesus" CONCLUSION: 10.
