Sermon Tone Analysis

*Luke** 13:10-17*

10 And He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath.

11 And there was a woman who for eighteen years had had a sickness caused by a spirit; and she was bent double, and could not straighten up at all.

12 When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your sickness.”

13 And He laid His hands on her; and immediately she was made erect again and began glorifying God.

14 But the synagogue official, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, began saying to the crowd in response, “There are six days in which work should be done; so come during them and get healed, and not on the Sabbath day.”

15 But the Lord answered him and said, “You hypocrites, does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead him away to water him?

16 “And this woman, a daughter of Abraham as she is, whom Satan has bound for eighteen long years, should she not have been released from this bond on the Sabbath day?”

17 As He said this, all His opponents were being humiliated; and the entire crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things being done by Him.

I.       Jesus was teaching in the synagogue on the Sabbath

!! A.   Jesus observed the woman who had been in physical need for 18 years

!!! 1.

A sickness due to a spirit

!!!! a)    Still coming to church faithfully

!!!!! (1)  Came to get teaching

!!!!! (2)  Got something unexpected   

!!!! b)    Probably prayed for relief many years

!!!!! (1)  Was not answered quickly

!!!!! (2)  Jesus shows up

!!!!!! (a)    See’s her

!!!!!! (b)   Answers here prayer of the last 18 years for a demonstration to the Glory of God to free people    

!!!!! (3)  She did not seem bitter

!!!!! (4)  Evidenced by Her instance response of praise

!!!!! (5)  What a provocation               

!!! 2.     Could not straighten up    

!! B.   Jesus called her to come forward

!!! 1.

The woman had to come to Jesus

!!!! a)    Jesus was in the front teaching

!!!! b)    Exposed her handicap to all

!!!!! (1)  It was a spiritual oppression Jesus wanted to expose not the woman herself

!!!!! (2)  But the enemy, to defeat him

!!!!! (3)  He also wanted to set her free

!!!!!! (a)    To set her free to remain free 

!!!!! (4)  And to also teach every one that now is the time for freedom from the works of the devil today & any day    

!!! 2.     Jesus healed her

!!! 3.     Jesus laid hands on her

!!! 4.     Immediately healed, and straighten up

!!!! a)    We all need to be healed and straightened up

8 The Lord opens the eyes of the blind;

The Lord raises up those who are bowed down;

The Lord loves the righteous;

!!! 5.     The woman began praising God

II.

Then there was a worldly confrontation (13:14)

!! A.   Jesus heals a crippled woman in a synagogue on the Sabbath

!!! 1.     /The criticism of Jesus/ (13:14) the synagogue ruler scolds the congregation for seeking and getting healed on Sunday  

!!!! a)    Why didn’t this official heal this woman the previous 18 years

!!!!! (1)  Did he have the ability?

!!!!! (2)  Was he jealous that Jesus did…..

!!!! b)    Rebukes Jesus for healing on the Sabbath

!!!!! (1)  The woman had been bound by a bad back, just the physical  

!!!!! (2)  The official had been bound by his traditions, his mind and his heart…

!!! 2.     /The condemnation by Jesus/ (13:15–16): The Savior points out the sheer hypocrisy of the ruler and his friends

!!!! a)    Jesus defended the woman

!!! 3.     They would no doubt care for a needy animal on the Sabbath (13:15)

!!!! a)    Jesus wanted to free or loose them both          

!!!! b)    Verse 12 woman you are freed from your sickness

!!!! c)     Verse 16 should not this woman be released form this bond on the Sabbath

*Jonah 3:7*

7  He issued a proclamation and it said, “In Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let man, beast, herd, or flock taste a thing.

Do not let them eat or drink water.

!!!!! (1)  She being a daughter of Abraham

!!!!! (2)  A worshiper of God

!!!!! (3)  Not under a worldly degree of an unbelieving king     

!!! 4.     How much more important to care for a needy person (13:16)

!!!! a)    Jesus rebuked the leaders          

!!!!! (1)  By showing he and the rest of the congregation treated their animals better then this woman

!!!!! (2)  Any tradition that keeps us from help people in need is not from God

!!!!! (3)  Jesus response was hypocrisy “outward show” formalism

!!!!!! (a)    Is our faith an outward show or does it get into us and change us inwardly?

!!!!!! (b)   Are we caught up in traditions and formulas we have seen or been taught instead of the word of God?

III.

The lesson this teaches

!! A.   Later on Jesus went on to warn them in the kingdom of God, many birds will come and roost on the tree that faith produces, don’t mistake the birds for fruit.

!! B.   Satan wants to put people in bondage

!! C.   Trusting in Jesus no matter what is the issue

!! D.   Jesus wants to set people free and heal them

IV.The results of this confrontation (13:17)

!! A.   The leaders were shamed

!!! 1.     Shame has 2 responses

!!!! a)    Change

!!!! b)    Revenge

!!! 2.     The scripture reveals both attitudes

!!!! a)    The crowd

!!!! b)    The followers

!!! 3.

There are two interpretations to the birds and leaven

!!!! a)    One is the work of the church expanding

!!!!! (1)  The seed starts small, grows to overshadowed what once overshadowed it

!!!!! (2)  The tree of Gods kingdom has fruit that lines up with his word

!!!!! (3)  The tree is to have fruit        

!!!! b)    The other is evil expanding

!!!!! (1)  In another parable the birds came to rob the seed

!!!!! (2)  They rest in the trees that started in faith and ended in fruitlessness

!!!!!! (a)    They have no life giving replication

!!!!!! (b)   Are we teaching our kids to be like Jesus

!!!!!! (c)    Better then us     

!!!!! (3)  Don’t mistake the birds as fruit

!!!!!! (a)    They are the enemy

!!!!!! (b)   They have come to rob the truth of God’s word                

!! B.   Jesus and his followers are joyful because of his wonderful works
