1/2/18— Overview of John, perhaps set the structure of John and the major themes (Light/dark, Trial/courtroom, Jesus’ Deity). Perhaps Focus on the “Two Books” of John. The book of Signs (miracles) which ends in Chapter 11, and the Book of Glory which brings us to the crucifixion.
1/3/18— John chapter 1. The prologue (1:1-18) tells us who Jesus is, the rest of Chapter 1 shows us who he is.
1/4/18— John Chapter 2. Focus on the wedding of Cana. His first miracle and sign that the Messiah has come, he will fulfill the prophecy of , to make for all peoples a feast of “well-aged wine”
1/5/18— John Chapter 3. Focus on Nicodemas, culminating in .
1/8/18— John chapter 4. The woman at the well is a great story to dive into here.
1/9/18— John chapter 5. 5:30-47 tell us about 5 ‘witnesses’ to Christ: John the Baptist, Jesus’ Works, Jesus’ Father, Scripture, and Moses. This might be a good section to focus on.
1/10/18— John chapter 6. This is a really long narrative about bread, blood and flesh. Maybe Draw the theme of Manna from heaven from the OT to Christ in , or show that Jesus’ feeding the 5 thousand at the beginning is a picture of what he offers to do spiritually to those who believe. There is a lot of great imagery to work on here. Jesus also walks on water in this chapter. Plus the “I am the bread of life” statement.
1/11/18— John chapter 7. Jesus at the feast of booths has a great connection that crosses 7 and 8. So maybe it would be good to cover the connection on 1/12/18. In chapter 7 we can also focus on the impact Jesus had on people. His ministry really caused people to wonder if he could be the One, the Prophet ().
1/12/18— John chapter 8. We might have to comment on the question about not being in the oldest and best manuscripts. Nevertheless, there are two traditions at the feast of booths that Jesus is directly responding to. The first is that the feast of Booths is a celebration for the water which provided for the harvest. Jesus stands up and announces that he is the source of living water. The second in the 75 ft. torches they would light which would be visible from 20 miles on a good night. Jesus announces he is the light of the world. There are a lot of other great things in also.
1/15/18— John chapter 9. Jesus heals a man born blind, and the once-blind man faces intense interrogation in opposition. John shows us what willful disobedience and blindness looks like in the pharisees here.
1/16/18— John chapter 10. “I am the good shepherd” This one should be pretty straight forward.
1/17/18— John chapter 11. The resurrection of Lazarus, pointing to the resurrection for all believers and the omnipotent power of Christ of save even now. Also is the end of the book of Signs as it is the last miracle John records from Jesus. The next “book” focuses on Jesus’ glory.
1/18/18—John chapter 12. We can kick off the “Book of Glory” with Jesus’ triumphal entry. Immediately followed by “Some Greeks” seeking Christ, showing that his mission is for all the nations.
1/19/18— John chapter 13. Jesus washes his disciples’ feet, displaying perfect humility and service. Not just an example for us to follow, but a picture of how far Christ condescended to save us. Also Judas leaves to betray Christ in this chapter.
1/22/18— John chapter 14. A lot of good stuff here. “I am the way the truth and the life”, we can focus our time around that phrase.
1/23/18— John chapter 15. “I am the true vine” This is a great text to talk about the need to abide and ongoing sanctification.
1/24/18— John chapter 16. Focus on the Holy Spirit and his work. Why he is important, and why it is actually better that Jesus went away (16:7)
1/25/18— John chapter 17. High-priestly prayer. This prayer offers a lot to focus on. We can highlight a number of themes.
1/26/18— John chapter 18. Jesus’ arrest and questioning. We can highlight the opposition to him, how he was abandoned and betrayed, yet “My kingdom is not of this world”
1/29/18— John chapter 19. Jesus is crucified, and his death fulfills scripture ().
1/30/18— John chapter 20. The resurrection, eye witnesses. Jesus confronts the doubter— which can connect to the “Seeing is believing” kind of person. The purpose of the entire book is mentioned, but I imagine we will mention that in the overview on the first day.
1/31/18— John chapter 21. Jesus restoring Peter is a great story of grace and redemption, especially for those of us that have sinned against the Lord in serious ways.
2/1/18— An overview of where we have been, and how to take what we have seen in John and apply to how we read the whole bible.
