Acts 2:4

4  And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.

I.       The promise of baptism in the Holy Spirit

A.   We looked at last week the four instances of the promise of the Holy spirit in the gospels

Matthew 3:11, Mark 1:8, Luke 3:16, John 1:33

B.   John the Baptist stated that he was baptizing in or with water, Jesus with the Holy Ghost and fire

C.   The means of this spiritual baptism is indicated in no levels or class of believer

1 Corinthians 12:13

…..we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

1.     There are two instances in the New Testament when there was human belief only

a)      Simon the magician believed, but not in the Holy Spirit

Acts 8:9-25

b)      Then there came two apostles, Peter and John. They prayed that those who had believed and were baptized might receive the Holy Spirit and validate their faith.

c)      When Paul put his hands upon them, they received the Holy Spirit

II.    The fulfillment of John the Baptists promise of the baptism in the Holy Spirit

A.   Confirmed by the Lord Jesus himself

Acts 1:5

4 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me;

5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

1.     The Lord gave further information as to when this historical event was going to take place: “not many days hence.”

2.     The expression “baptism” or “baptize in the Holy Spirit,” is not found in

Acts 2:1-13

3.     How then can we identify this baptism as that to which John the Baptist and Jesus said was yet to come and which Paul said had already taken place

B.   A key occurrence of the term “baptism” or “baptize in the Holy Spirit,” found in

C.   This passage makes this identification clear

1.     Peter confirms was in Caesarea by the sea speaking to Cornelius and his group of Gentiles. He said,

Acts 11:15-16

15  “And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them (the gentiles) just as He did upon us (the Jews) at the beginning.

16  “And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’

III.   Speaking in tongues, was the evidence of the Holy Spirit baptism

A.   At Pentecost in acts those Jews who were gathered experienced this special coming of the Holy Spirit

1.     The role of the Holy Spirit

2.     15th verse people stop at this and use it as a quasi spiritual pry bar on struggling peoples lives

3.     Verse 16 and 17 tell the rest of the intent of verse 15

John 14:15-17

15  “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

16  “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;

17  that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.

4.     It is the Holy Spirit that gives us strength

5.     Being sensitive to the Holy Spirit that changes us if we allow the Holy spirits help

6.     the spirit abides with and in us

B.   Want further proof

John 16:7-14

7 “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

8  “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;

9  concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;

10  and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me;

11  and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

12  “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

13  “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

14  “He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.

C.   Spoke in other (hētérais, “qualitatively different” than their mother tongue) languages.

1.     These were not “the unknown tongue” spoken by the Corinthians

1 Corinthians 14:2

2  For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries.

1 Corinthians 14:4

4  One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church.

1 Corinthians 14:13

13  Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.

1 Corinthians 14:19

19  however, in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.,

1 Corinthians 14:26-27

26  What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.

27  If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one must interpret

2.     Not a language per se, but an utterance not understood by the hearers.

Acts 2:6-8

6  And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language.

7  They were amazed and astonished, saying, “Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans?

8  “And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born?

3.     They are definitely called dialects in Greek which can only mean ethnic languages

4.     In other instances, the word glṓssai, “languages or tongues,” is used in the plural with a singular pronoun, referring to ethnic languages

Mark 16:17

17  “These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues;

1 Corinthians 12:10

10  and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.

1 Corinthians 12:28

28  And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues.

1 Corinthians 12:30

30  All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they?

1 Corinthians 13:1

1  If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

1 Corinthians 13:8

8  Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away.

1 Corinthians 14:5-6

5  Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying.

6  But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of revelation or of knowledge or of prophecy or of teaching?

1 Corinthians 14:18

18  I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all;

1 Corinthians 14:22

22  So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe.

D.   Unbelievers need no interpreter to understand tongues, they usually do not interpret them but they do know some God thing is happening

Acts 1:5

5  for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

IV.Who is baptized with the Holy Spirit?

A.   The words of Paul in

1 Corinthians 12:13

13  For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

B.   Make this unmistakably clear, especially if we translate it literally from the Greek:

“And indeed in or with one Spirit [that was the event manifested at Jerusalem, Caesarea, and Ephesus] we were all baptized into one body [the body of Christ, the Church], either Jews or Greeks [Gentiles], or slaves or free, and all were given to drink one Spirit” [author’s translation].

C.   Observe the word “all,” occurring twice.

D.   Even the immature, carnal Christians of Corinth

1 Corinthians 3:1-3

1  And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ.

2  I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able,

3  for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like mere men?

E.   All believers whose faith was energized by the Holy Spirit, were baptized into the body of Christ.

F.    This is not an experience of individual believers as a sign of maturity

1.     Jesus Christ accomplished the gift of the Holy Spirit for us all as a result of His incarnation, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension

V.   When does this baptism in the Holy Spirit take place?

A.   Before we are Christians, the Holy Spirit’s only relation to us is that He convicts us of sin

John 16:8

8  “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;

B.   Then when we trust the work of Christ for us on the cross, our relation to the Holy Spirit changes

John 14:17

17  that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.

Romans 8:14

14  For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

C.   Believers are joined to His body when they are saved

1.     When this joining is done by Christ, it is no more “our” salvation but “His,”

VI.Pentecost is the beginning of the baptism in the Holy Spirit

A.   A work of God also manifested at Caesarea and Ephesus.

B.   This work of God began the formation of Christ’s invisible body, the Church

C.   We personally appropriate this work of Christ when we believe in Christ through the empowering of the Holy Spirit

D.   We can personally experience the meaning of Pentecost today!
