Baptizing at Christmastime

Why are we baptizing so close to Christmas?

How are baptisms and Christmas linked?

closely related
John the Baptist and Jesus were only six months apart.
John and Jesus were only six months apart.
But they share more than just the same ages.

Jesus & John were family.

They were probably distant cousins thorough their mothers.
They both were born into families that followed God.
.
Joseph was faithful to the law of God and did as the angel instructed him. ()
Mary described herself as “the Lord’s servant.”
John’s parents are described as “righteous” and “obedient” to God.()
Just as these children are being brought up
John the Baptist had a very good heritage. Both Zacharias and Elisabeth were godly parents. The life the parents live has an effect on their children. The greatest gifts parents can give their children is to live a godly life daily in their homes. --C. M. Pentz
What impact are you willing to have on your children and grandchildren or others in your circle of influence?
Joseph was faithful to the law of God and did as the angel instructed him. ()
Mary described herself as “the Lord’s servant.”
John’s parents are described as “righteous” and “obedient” to God.(Luke 1:6)
Just as these children are being brought up
What intentional actions are you taking to provide a model to those who look up to you for guidance?
John the Baptist had a very good heritage. Both Zacharias and Elisabeth were godly parents. The life the parents live has an effect on their children. The greatest gifts parents can give their children is to live a godly life daily in their homes. --C. M. Pentz

Jesus & John were born similarly.

miracles
Both miraculous births:
Both miraculous births
Both miraculous births

Both miraculous births
John’s mother Elizabeth was “very old” ()
Jesus’ mother Mary was a virgin ()
Angels appeared to the parents:
To John’s father Zechariah (-ff)
To Jesus’ mother, Mary ()
To Mary’s husband to be, Joseph ()
God had plan for these men, but they chose everyday to follow it.
Our births may not have been accompanied by miracles, but God chose you to be something special for the kingdom, right where you are.
Just as God has a plan for these children who were baptized this morning.
What are you willing to do to aid them on their journey?

Jesus & John introduced two ordinances.

Mary described herself as “the Lord’s servant.”
John’s parents are described as “righteous” and “obedient” to God.()

Jesus & John introduced two ordinances (celebrations).

Ordinances are celebrations or commemorations, usally of solemn events. -def. Websters
The only two ordinances given to the church are baptism and Communion.
Communion: from Christ
Baptism: Brought to prominence by John the Baptist
Baptism and Christmas:

John pointed to Jesus
Jesus fulfilled John's prophecy (hand & shadow)
John 1:23 NIV
John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’ ”
John did not have to power to save, but he pointed to the one who did.
Baptism does not save us from sin and bring us into the family of God. It is a symbol of the event, not the event itself.

A minister was seeking to explain the significance of baptism to a new convert. He was gesturing as he talked and noticed that as he was using his hand its shadow fell on the ground. So he said to the convert, “Do you see the shadow of my hand on the sand? Now this is just a shadow. The hand is the real thing. And when you came to Jesus, when you believed in Jesus, that was the real baptism. You were joined to him, and what happened to him also happened to you. Jesus was alive, then he died and was buried, and then he rose from the dead. That is what happened to you when you believed in him.” He pointed to the shadow on the sand and said, “When you go down in the water and are raised up again, that is a picture of what has already happened.” Water baptism is a picture, a symbol to teach us what happened to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus.

Baptism points to Christ, just as John pointed to Jesus.
Baptism points to Christ, just as John pointed to Jesus.

Take this with you...

When you look at baptisms, remember Christ.
When you think about Christmas, remember the John pointed to Christ.
God's power is available to all who will follow-just as these who are baptized today displayed.
We as a church consecrate our efforts, resources, buildings, to do the same.
