John 10:14–18 CSB
“I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and my own know me, just as the Father knows me, and I know the Father. I lay down my life for the sheep. But I have other sheep that are not from this sheep pen; I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. Then there will be one flock, one shepherd. This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life so that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have the right to lay it down, and I have the right to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.”

I.
8 In the same region, shepherds were staying out in the fields and keeping watch at night over their flock. 9 Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: 11 Today in the city of David a Savior was born for you, who is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be the sign for you: You will find a baby wrapped tightly in cloth and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying:
14 Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and peace on earth to people he favors!,
15 When the angels had left them and returned to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go straight to Bethlehem and see what has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”

God chose shepherds purposely.

The great news of Christmas was not just for the elite. It is for every man.

Illus: God showed his intent in Jesus Christ in who he brought the message to.
Imagine if he had brought the message of the gospel to the pharisees or leading religious rulers. That would have indicated that God’s intent in the gospel was to bring salvation to the select overly pious religious community. It would mean that Jesus came for just the religiously good.
Imagine if God had brought the message of the gospel to the political rulers of his day. It would have indicated that Jesus came for those of clout and standing.
God did not announce his arrival first to the wealthy, or those of great influence. He introduced his coming to a bunch of stinky shepherds.
Why? God wanted the world to know that his saving message was for every man. God delivered the message that would change the world to the blue collar men of little influence.

SONS AND HEIRS
27 For those of you who were baptized into Christ have been clothed with Christ. 28 There is no Jew or Greek, slave or free, male and female; since you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Jesus understood himself as a shepherd.

Illus: Watch what scripture says and see how Jesus fulfills the role....

Illus: This is the picture of true servanthood, The shepherd was of far greater importance than the sheep, yet he would lay down his life for the sheep. The sheep are dumb, often not willing to drink from moving water so the shepherd takes them where they will be nourished. The shepherd truly gives his life to animals who would be devoured if not for him.

God’s message was clear.

11 Today in the city of David a Savior was born for you, who is the Messiah, the Lord.

God wants all men to know of His saving gift.

Illus: Here is the deal.... we put up so much time and effort at christmas time. We spend time going to parties, decorating our houses, baking food… but we neglect to the most important thing of the season.
What do we not do, we don’t share with others the good news that God became a man, died on the cross and offered new life to us.
This christmas, have you invited anyone to join you at church to hear the good news of our saviour… will you invite them to come with you on Christmas eve?
There is no greater gift you can give than to give the great news of God’s salvation to people who don’t know him.
Illus: (CSB) 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel,, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith,, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith.,

THE RIGHTEOUS WILL LIVE BY FAITH

Peace is found only in the Cross of Christ.

13 Suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying:
14 Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and peace on earth to people he favors!,
Illus: This is the Christmas message… Jesus came to this earth with one sinfular purpose… to save men from their sins. He did this by living the perfect life, dying on the cross and being raised from the dead.
He was truly the great shepherd who brought life to sheep inteded for death.

1 The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need.
I have what I need.
2 He lets me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside quiet waters.

3 He renews my life; he leads me along the right paths for his name’s sake.

4 Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for you are with me; your rod and your staff—they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6 Only goodness and faithful love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I live.
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
as long as I live.,

Your response is simple.

15 When the angels had left them and returned to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go straight to Bethlehem and see what has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”

Every man is called to go.

Illus: Who will you bring this news to. Who will you tell, who will you invite? Will the message of the gospel matter enough in your life that it will make a difference in the way you live?
Illus: (CSB) 18 Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Why did God appear specifically to the shepherds?
Who can you go tell the good news of Jesus Christ to?
