INTRODUCTION
Under divine guidance, then, John was not content to begin his Gospel story as Mark did with the testimony of John the Baptist ().
Nor was it enough to go back with Luke to the birth narratives of the Baptizer and Jesus ().
John did not even go back with Matthew in his genealogy to Abraham and the beginning of the people of Israel () nor with Luke back to Adam and the beginning of the human race ().
John started at the very beginning as does, when there was just God.
He linked the incarnation with the Word that was present at the very beginning of time ().

The Greatness of Christ
verse 1 -
Eternally Pre-existent
WAS
Was = Was Continuing.
“In the beginning was continuing the Word, and the Word was continuing with God, and the Word was continually God.”
Or as one of my friends accurately (though ungrammatically) concluded, “Jesus always was wasing!”
That is precisely it.
Jesus Christ is preexistent.
He always was continuing.
If you are like me, this kind of thinking makes for a super-headache.
Our minds look backward until time disappears and thought collapses in exhaustion.
Thus we begin our thoughts of the greatness of Christ.
Eternally in Relationship with God The Father
Next the apostle adds, “and the Word was with God.” Literally, “the Word was continually toward God.”
The Father and the Son were continually face to face.
The preposition “with” bears the idea of nearness, along with a sense of movement toward God.
That is to say, there has always existed the deepest equality and intimacy in the Holy Trinity.
Again our minds stagger as we think of Jesus as always having continued (without beginning and without end) in perfect joyous intimacy with the Father
Eternally God
Moreover, as the final phrase of verse 1 adds, “and the Word was God.”
The exact meaning is that the Word was God in essence and character.
He was God in every way, though he was a separate person from God the Father.
The phrase perfectly preserves Jesus’ separate identity, while also stating that he is God.
This was his continuing identity from all eternity.
He was God constantly.
Eternally Creator
Finally, Jesus is the Creator of the universe.
“Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.”
The fact of Christ’s Creatorship is the consistent witness of the New Testament.
says: “For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.
He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
adds: “… in these last days [God] has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.”
states: “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”
Also, says: “… yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came, and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.”
VERSE 14
AND THE WORD BECAME FLESH
AND THE WORD BECAME FLESH
THE PURPOSE OF THE MESSAGE IS TO UNDERSTAND WHO I AM.
BUT I CAN’T UNDERSTAND WHO I AM UNLESS I UNDERSTAND WHO HE IS.
AS CHRISTIANS WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND WHO WE ARE, BUT I CAN’T UNDERSTAND MY IDENTITY UNLESS I FIRST KNOW HIS IDENTITY.
(AUGUST) TO KNOW GOD AND TO IMITATE HIM
(ATHANASIUS) GOD BECAME LIKE US SO WE COULD BECOME LIKE HIM
THE SON OF GOD BECAME THE SON OF MAN SO THE SONS OF MAN COULD BECOME THE SONS OF GOD.
WHEN I COULDN’T BE LIKE HIM AS GOD HE BECAME LIKE ME SO I COULD STILL BE LIKE HIM.
AND DWELT AMONG US
TO SETTLE OR TO PITCH A TENT, TO REMAIN TO LODGE
THE WORD CAME TO DWELL AMONG US & WE BEHELD HIS GLORY.
IN OTHER WORDS JESUS CAME TO OVERSHADOW US WITH HIS GLORY.
TO SHOW US THAT NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN TO BE IN HIS PRESENCE AND DOING HIS WILL.
IN THIS DAY AND AGE, EVERYBODY WANTS TO ACT LIKE THEIR SO INDEPENDENT AND DON’T NEED NOTHING FROM NOBODY.
BUT WHEN YOU BEGIN TO SEE HIS GLORY, YOU WILL BECOME OVERSHADOWED WITH PURPOSE.
YOU CAN’T RUN FROM IT, DENY IT OR HIDE FROM IT.
GOD’S PURPOSE WILL BE LIKE FIRE SHUT UP IN YOUR BONES.
EVERYTHING ELSE WILL ONLY BE SECOND BEST TO WALKING OUT THE WILL OF GOD.
AMOS SAID I WAS NEITHER A PROPHET NOR THE SON OF A PROPHET, I WAS TAKING CARE OF MY FATHER’S SHEEP AND GATHERING FRUIT AND THE LORD TOOK ME.
HE DIDN’T ASK; HE TOOK ME
PAUL SAID I WAS APPREHENDED BY THAT WHICH I WOULD APPREHEND - I WAS TRYING TO GET GOD AND GOD GOT ME BEFORE I COULD GET HIM
BEFORE YOU WERE HAPPY TO JUST SIT IN THE BACK OF THE CHURCH; TIPTOE IN AND TIPTOE OUT BUT ALL OF A SUDDEN GOD OVERSHADOWED YOU AND NOW YOU CAN’T WAIT TO GET INTO GOD’S HOUSE.
NOW YOU CAN’T WAIT TO GET HOME NOT TO TURN ON THE TV OR GET ON THE PHONE WITH YOUR GIRLFRIEND BUT TO GET INTO THE WORD OF GOD
SOME OF YOU ARE BEING OVERSHADOWED IN HERE TODAY.
THE REJECTION, THE SELECTION, THE ELECTION
THE REJECTION
God Himself came to dwell with His people.
The Creator of all loved us so much that He came down and clothed Himself w/ flesh.
But even though He came, He was rejected back then and He is still rejected even day.
THE SELECTION
BUT AS MANY AS RECEIVED HIM -
This means an unlimited number (not just 144k)
This means anyone and everyone can receive Him
The Creator came down to dwell with us but we still had to SELECT (receive) Him.
We received Him by faith and by faith we understand who He is; THE LORD OF LORDS AND THE KING OF KINGS!!
THE ELECTION
[POINT] THE RESULT OF RECEIVING HIM MEANS WE’LL BE RECEIVING HIS POWER
POWER = 1.
AUTHORITY 2. DUNAMIS - DYNAMITE
AUTHORITY
SPEAK THOSE THINGS THAT ARE NOT AS THOUGH THEY WERE
TO CAST DOWN DEVILS AND DEMONS
DYNAMITE
TO BLOW UP THE SCHEMES OF THE SCANDOLOUS
TO BLOW UP THE TRAPS OF THE ENEMY
