We often hear people say, "It is my body and I will do with it as I please." When you purchase something it belongs to you. Jesus Christ purchased our salvation and we belong to Him. Ye are not your own is an established fact. The Bible says, Ye are bought with a price. There was a great price paid that sinners might be redeemed from the slave market of sin. Peter reminds us of the price paid: Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. () What Jesus Christ did for us in the shedding of His blood is, for the most part, beyond our comprehension. We can explain it to a degree by using terms such as love, grace and mercy. However, we still fall far short of fully understanding God's love. We know it is real, we know it works and we know what it has done for us, but who can sufficiently put it into words. What a great God we have! The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee. () When the day came for the sins of man to be paid for, it was God who paid the redemptive price with the blood of Christ. Not one sin has ever been forgiven apart from the blood of Christ. No wonder Peter calls the blood of Christ precious. Remember what God says about it, ...ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price. () The ownership indicated by a seal is seen in the words of Christ, I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. () The Lord knows His own. Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his... () Just as cattle are sometimes given a brand as a seal of ownership, the believer is given the Holy Spirit as a seal of God's ownership. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. () The Seal Speaks of a Pledge The Holy Spirit is the earnest of our inheritance. The word earnest speaks of a pledge or a guarantee. The word is a legal and commercial term that refers to a down payment made as a pledge of full payment. It is the guarantee of the purchaser's promise and intent to follow through on the entire transaction. The meaning of this sealing is shown in the Old Testament. Upon a king sealing a document it became an official legal transaction (), and it was unalterable. Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not. () Once the king's signature was given, the document was sealed by pressing the signet ring into the soft wax on the document. The seal was proof of the authenticity of the document and was legally binding. So when the Spirit seals the new child of God, his standing in Christ is unalterable. The presence of the Spirit in the believer is God's pledge that he will receive a full inheritance.
