Jesus is the Reason for the Season...

Luke 2:8–10 NLT
That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people.

Why is Jesus the Reason for the Season?

1. THE FIRST PURPOSE OF CHRISTMAS IS CELEBRATION

Luke 2:10 NLT
but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people.

Why Do We Celebrate?

God LOVES Us!

John 3:16 NLT
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

God is WITH Us.

Hebrews 13:5 TEV
Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.”

God is FOR us.

John 3:17 NLT
God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.

2. THE SECOND PURPOSE OF CHRISTMAS IS SALVATION.

Luke 2:11 NIV
Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.

What does it mean to be Saved?

Saved = Rescued, delivered, set free, released

We are Saved From Our Sin (Past)

Matthew 1:21 NLT
And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

Sin = Attitude

Romans 7:24–25 The Message
I’ve tried everything and nothing helps. I’m at the end of my rope. Is there no one who can do anything for me? Isn’t that the real question? The answer, thank God, is that Jesus Christ can and does. He acted to set things right in this life of contradictions where I want to serve God with all my heart and mind, but am pulled by the influence of sin to do something totally different.

We are Saved for A Purpose.

2 Timothy 1:9 TEV
He saved us and called us to be his own people, not because of what we have done, but because of his own purpose and grace. He gave us this grace by means of Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,

We are Saved by God’s Grace.

Ephesians 2:8–9 NIV
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.

3. THE THIRD PURPOSE OF CHRISTMAS IS RECONCILIATION.

Luke 2:13–14 NLT
Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying, “Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.”

Reconciliation = Restored Relationship

Peace

Jesus gives Us 3 Types of Peace

Jesus gives us PEACE WITH GOD.

Romans 5:1 TEV
Now that we have been put right with God through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus gives us the PEACE OF GOD.

Philippians 4:6–7 TEV
Don’t worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart. And God’s peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus.

Jesus brings us PEACE WITH EACH OTHER.

Matthew 5:9 NIV84
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
