The Path to Learning the Foundations of the Faith

The Call to Become Radical Disciples

WHAT ARE RADICAL DISCIPLES?

Radical Disciples are those men and women and children who live their lives, totally and exclusively for another kingdom – the kingdom of God.

Radical Disciples are those genuine Christians who have rearranged their lives so that in every way they show and demonstrate their allegiance to the King of kings and the Lord of lords.

Radical Disciples are those true disciples who are extravagant givers to the kingdom of God because they have determined that He is worth the whole of their time, talent and treasure.

Radical Disciples are those Spirit filled Christians, whose chief priority and purpose is to make certain that the fame of Jesus is spread throughout all nations until every people group has heard the gospel proclaimed.

Radical Disciples are those Christ centered believers who see their jobs as their calling from the Lord to bring the light of the gospel into the darkness of sinful humanity

TO FEELING OBLIGATED AND BEING OBEDIENT TO BRING THE GOSPEL TO THE NATIONS

Romans 1:14 ESV
I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish.
Romans 1:15 ESV
So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.

Those who belong to Jesus – who are radical Christians – have been transformed to understand that we are not free to live and to do as we please. Paul puts it this way

15
1 Corinthians 6:19 ESV
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,
1 Corinthians 6:20 ESV
for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

“Every saved person on this side of heaven owes the gospel to every unsaved person this side of hell (David Platt)

The Aim of Our Obligation:

Romans 1:5 ESV
through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations,
r
Romans 16:26 ESV
but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith—
Matthew 28:19 ESV
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Matthew 28:20 ESV
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

The Radical Beauty: We are saved by the Lord to finish His saving work among the nations

So, if you are not doing any of the above with your life then you are not being obedient to the command of the Lord to go. And, “If you are not going then you are not a radical disciple.

HEEDING AND OBEYING THE CALL TO DIE

John 12:24 ESV
Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.

· The shell begins to fall off and what was once a self-contained seed is not broken down and spread throughout the earth.

The value of the seed is not the seed, itself; but what is inside of the seed. But in order for what is inside to emerge, the outer shell needs to die.

Jesus makes this point to illustrate the true meaning of disciple. The word disciple comes from a Greek word from which we get our English word martyr

When Christ bids a man to follow him, he bids him come and die (Dietrich Bonhoffer)

The Measuring Rod of Christ

What if I told you that the true measurement of a church’s faithfulness or a Christian’s faithfulness was not measured in what we have gained, but in what we have given away?

John 12:24 ESV
Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.
John 12:25 ESV
Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
john 12: 24 25

Are You Willing to Die?

1. “We do have to give up everything we have to follow Jesus.”

Mark 10:21 ESV
And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

Notice from these words of Jesus that the issue is not simply that the man did not want to sell all he had and give to the poor; the REAL issue with him as it is with many in this world is that he did value the treasure he would gain.

Jesus was not asking the man (nor us) to simply go away empty. He was asking the man: “Do you value heaven’s treasure over this world’s treasure?”

2. “We do have to love him in a way that makes our closest relationships in this world look like hate.”

Luke 14:26 ESV
“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
