Answer to “whose authority” part III

We saw doing the right thing needs to be with right heart (Mt21:28-32)
We have looked at rejecting the son is costly (Mt21:33-46)
Today we look at the wedding banquet prepared for the Son (Mt22:1-14)
This started when Jesus authority was questioned.
Matthew 21:23 NASB95
23 When He entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him while He was teaching, and said, “By what authority are You doing these things, and who gave You this authority?”
Mt21:
Whereas Jesus did not directly answer the question he told three parables to show the answer and convict hearts to turn in faith while they can.
Whereas this parable we are looking at today is similar to the one found in Lk14:16-24 there are differences too and we are going to treat them separately.
There are three divisions within this section today.
The invitation rejected by the invited (vv.1-7) - in this section it is displayed that the people of God, the chosen people, were rejecting the invitation to the king’s (God’s) banquet. They had been given ample opportunity
The invitation extended to strangers (vv.8-10) -Her,e you will see that God extends the invitation to those outside of the ones who were His chosen. This to the Gentiles and to the strangers.
The invitation has some requirements (vv.11-14) - finally in this section you see that there needs to be a proper response to the invitation. The proper response to God’s grace that is extended

Let’s turn to pg. 121 in story book; and Mt22:1-14 in Bible
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?

I. The Invitation rejected

What does Jesus say this parable is about (v.2)? - a wedding feast being given for the son. This is the king who is throwing the feast, so what does that make the Son?
Can you pick out and tell who the different people are in this parable (vv.1-7)? - (Below is not on a slide)
You have Jesus (v.1)
King and Son (v.2)
Slaves and invited guests (v.3)
Kings armies (v.7)
It was standard, typical practice at the time to issue two invitations.
A general invitation - This is a royal invitation to come and should not be taken lightly. It is an honor and a privilege to receive the invitation
Second, is come the banquet is ready - It is expected when call goes out to come, that you will come, it would be an insult to the king to not come when you have been invited.
In spite of the invitation, acceptance and then the refusal to come it may seem drastic what transpires in (v.7), but we need to remember this is a parable, a story with a spiritual truth and application.
What was the response to the kings call (v.3)?
What was the king’s command (v.4)?
How did the invited guests respond (v.3, 5)?
What did the invited guests do (v.6)?
Now that brings up some more detective work, see if you can tell me
Who is the King?
Who is the son?
Who are the slaves (servants)?
Who are the invited guests?
Who did they kill?
Now there is belief that since Jesus is speaking of the son being killed he is speaking of a time after his death and resurrection. It is believed a couple of different ways regarding the slaves (servants).
Prophets who brought God’s message before.
The Holy Spirit that calls the people to God’s kingdom though the Apostles and prophets.

II. Invitation Extended

What did king say about the invited guests (v.8)? - this is simple he says they are not worthy, but now, what are they not worthy of?
Why were they not worthy? - they did not heed to the call.
What were the king’s instructions (v.9)- go out and talk to anyone, everyone and invite them in.
What was the response (v.10)? - the wedding hall was full!
Now another question for you, who came (v.10)?
Now by the bad coming does not mean the king accepts bad lifestyle, this will be addressed in the next section when we get there.
When we think of the good and bad isn’t that what the church is comprised of. the good who have grown up in church knowing the Lord then choosing to follow the Lord and the bad, who when hears the gift of grace accepts it. We need to carry the message, the invitation out to everyone, the good and the bad for when we look at God’s standard we all fall short and would be in the bad category.

III. Invitation has requirements

We have been talking for awhile, so let’s look at the scripture again then discuss it.
Matthew 22:11–12 NASB95
11 “But when the king came in to look over the dinner guests, he saw a man there who was not dressed in wedding clothes, 12 and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without wedding clothes?’ And the man was speechless.
Matthew 22:13–14 NASB95
13 “Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14 “For many are called, but few are chosen.”
There are some general things we can pull out first.
What did the king do (v.11)? - he went to the wedding hall, someone stuck out to him.
What did the king say (v.12)? asked the man why not properly attired
How did the man respond (v.12)? -he was speechless
What was the result (v.13)? - bind him and throw him out
What was the response (v.14)? - many invited, few are chosen
OK, now when the king is talking about wedding clothes there are two schools of thought there.
Provided by the master of the banquet - There is sufficient historical evidence that in many cases the master of the banquet would provide the wedding clothes to the guests so everyone would be dressed properly; they were going to be in the presence of the king
Person is to be clean and wearing their Sunday best. They knew they were going to be with the king
Now spiritually speaking, since there a spiritual truth that must be applied. the clothing can be the righteousness of God provided through the blood of Jesus.
Now spiritually speaking, since there a spiritual truth that must be applied. the clothing can be the righteousness of God
Now spiritually speaking, since there a spiritual truth that must be applied. the clothing can be the righteousness of God
Isaiah 61:10 NASB95
10 I will rejoice greatly in the Lord, My soul will exult in my God; For He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
Who does GOd clothe?
The redeemed
Zechariah 3:3–4 NASB95
3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments and standing before the angel. 4 He spoke and said to those who were standing before him, saying, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” Again he said to him, “See, I have taken your iniquity away from you and will clothe you with festal robes.”
Zechariah 3:1–2 NASB95
1 Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. 2 The Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! Indeed, the Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?”
Zech
Revelation 3:4–5 NASB95
4 ‘But you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments; and they will walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. 5 ‘He who overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.
Zechariah 3:3–4 NASB95
3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments and standing before the angel. 4 He spoke and said to those who were standing before him, saying, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” Again he said to him, “See, I have taken your iniquity away from you and will clothe you with festal robes.”
and then there is
Revelation 19:6–8 NASB95
6 Then I heard something like the voice of a great multitude and like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, saying, Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns. 7 “Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready.” 8 It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.
REv
You have to accept the invitation of God’s grace through Jesus Christ and take off those filthy rags and be clothed in His righteousness.
That now brings us to (v.23) the ill prepared man, who came to the banquet did not come the way he was instructed to come. Sounds familiar doesn’t it. Many are that may.
Matthew 7:21 NASB95
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.
Not only could the man not participate in the banquet, the blessings of God’s grace, like every imposter who calls on the name of Jesus and does not do the will of God, he was thrown out.
Finally, we have our closing verse today that some take the Calvinist approach to “election”
Matthew 22:14 NASB95
14 “For many are called, but few are chosen.”
See God’s grace is available to all, but you have to accept it. You cannot fake it for.
Hebrews 4:12 NASB95
12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
You cannot fake it for you can also know:
John 12:48 NASB95
48 “He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.
And I previously mentioned
Matthew 7:21 NASB95
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.
So who are the chosen? The ones who hear and obey the invitation. God knows them and knows their heart.
This wraps up this trilogy of parables. The Chief priest, Scribes and the Elders of the people have rejected Jesus
They have surrendered their God given trust (21:28-32)
Tried to take the kingdom by their own power (21:33-46)
Gave away their status, and blessings by rejecting the Son (22:1-14)
