c. Scripture:

John 16:7–11 ESV
7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

II. BODY

A. The Holy Spirit’s role to the Un-churched

a. But 1st, context:

John 16:7–8 ESV
7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
ESV 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:

1. The Holy Spirit’s role: a Partnership w/ us

1. The Holy Spirit’s role: a Partnership w/ us

2. The H.S.’s role is 1st & foremost a Partnership w/ us

i if Jesus submits himself 2 death, resurrection, ascension- in comes the H.S.
ii. He is our advantage
- def: bring together; make better 4 common good
* An advantageous coming together
- Why should we & the world care?
*
- Why should we & the world care?
* Jesus is God w/us (Emmanuel)
John 1:14 ESV
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
* The H.S. is God IN us!
John 14:17 ESV
17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
~Brings us to the partnerwhip btwn us & H.S.
~ World can’t rec. (obtain possession)
~ H.S. wants the world 2 know Jesus & himself
-So he partners w/us!
iii. He partners with us to reach the un-churched: how...
- He gives us the words to say & therefore speaks through us (as discussed last week)
- Then he does the work in the hearts of the un-churched
* U’ve heard it said “working both ends against the middle?
~God uses H.S. 2 work both ends toward the middle (that is salvation)
* This is just like he did w/me...
~worked in & through the YP giving just the right words & illust
~all the while, working on my heart, convicting me…bringing me face-2-face w/my self
~ Because...

b. The Holy Spirit Convicts

John 16:8 ESV
8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:

1. Notice it doesn’t say condemn

i. Convict: Determine Guilt
ii. Condemn: Execute punishment
iii. Remember (frm last week) the H.S. is Jesus’ representative
- As seen in:
John 14:26 ESV
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
- In my name: represent Jesus & His mission
* Not condemn but save
- What was Jesus’ mission:
* Then, so it is w/the H.S
John 3:16–17 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
*There4 the H.S. wants 2 c the world saved!
* So, He doesn't condemn; but convicts
~ This means the H.S. shows the world where its wrong so that they c the need o a savior & accept Jesus’ free gift of salvation!
* What is our reason 4 showing the world its wrong?
~ What is our reason 4 showing the world its wrong?
~ Maybe we should take a que frm Jesus’ playbook

c. Convict how?

John 16:9 ESV
9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;
John 16:

1. Convict of Sin

John 16:9–11 ESV
9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
ESV9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
ESV9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
i. What is sin?

1. Convict of Sin

i. Sin is anything less than God’s perfection
Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
- Sin is anything less than God’s perfection
- God is perfection, therefore anything less is sin
- H.S. starts w/sin because relationship must start w/repentance
Mk 1:14-15
Mark 1:14–15 ESV
14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
ii. convict because the world doesn’t believe
- sin because relationship must start w/repentance
scripture vs
- Believe: Trust
* Trust What Jesus did on the cross
* Let’s not forget that the point is saving, not condemning
* But, if the H.S. can get the world 2 trust...
Ephesians 2:8–10 ESV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
~Next...
John 16:10 ESV
10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer;
- sin because relationship must start w/repentance
scripture vs

2. Convict of Righteousness

i. Jesus: the perfect representative o Righteousness!
John 14:7–11 ESV
7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.
- Because Jesus had to go away, the world needs 1 who perfectly demonstrates true righteousness
* That is the H.S. & his work in & through us!
John 16:11 ESV
11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

3. Convicts of Judgement

i. The ruler stands in judgement
Colossians 2:13–15 ESV
13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
:
- He’s already lost!
- We have victory in Jesus!
- We’re just waiting on the fulfillment o that judgement
