Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King;
Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!”
Joyful, all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies;
With th’angelic host proclaim,
“Christ is born in Bethlehem!”

Glory to the newborn king, Peace on earth and mercy mild

Kings often functioned like modern day dictators because they possessed absolute power and authority which no one had the right to question
no checks and balances to the use or abuse of power
Remember Herod who murdered all the male children under 2yrs of age in Bethlehem after the wise men came to worship Jesus
numerous kings in the OT who murdered any and all challengers to their throne
kings were often at war seeking either to protect their territory or expand it
2 Samuel 11:1 ESV
In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.
victors in war would kill, dispossess, plunder and take captives
common people were justly terrified when in the presence of a king
one wrong word or look and one could lose their life
peaceful kings were rare
kings who were merciful & mild were unheard of
Jesus though is called the Prince of Peace (Isa 9:6)
Jesus brings peace with God
Romans 5:1 ESV
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus was merciful
Hebrews 2:17 ESV
Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
Hebrews 4:15 ESV
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

God and sinners reconciled

One of the reasons for the joy of Christmas is that Jesus made the way for us to be made right with God
why do we need to be made right?
Romans 3:23 ESV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:7–8 ESV
For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
we were hostile to God and unable to please him and therefore under His wrath and curse
John 3:36 ESV
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
the wrath of God remains on all who do not believe in Jesus
Romans 1:18 ESV
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
Jesus makes peace with God on our behalf
1 John 2:2 ESV
He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
Romans 3:25 ESV
whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
Hebrews 2:17 ESV
Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
1 John 4:10 ESV
In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Joyful all ye nations rise …

This is good news for all the peoples of the world
the offer of salvation is no longer only for the Jews but for all

Join the triumph of the skies

a reference to the angelic announcement of the Saviour’s birth in Luke 2:10-11
Luke 2:10–11 ESV
And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
fear not: signs in the sky were interpreted as warnings from the gods
this was no warning but good news causing great joy: to you a Saviour has been born, Christ the Lord
Jesus is the One Chosen by God to be both Lord and Saviour
Cannot have a Saviour without a Lord!
Hark! the herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King!”
Christ, by highest Heav’n adored;
Christ the everlasting Lord;
Late in time, behold Him come,
Offspring of a virgin’s womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;
Hail th’incarnate Deity,
Pleased with us in flesh to dwell,
Jesus our Emmanuel.

Offspring of a virgin’s womb

A reference to the supernatural origin of Jesus
Philippians 2:5–7 ESV
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
Jesus’ birth was miraculous in that being conceived by the HS, he had no human father
He was God in the flesh
Had to be both God and man
God: to take away the sins of the world
Man: to be our substitute

Veiled in flesh the Godhead see … pleased as man with us to dwell

Hebrews 1:3 ESV
He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
Hebrews 2:14 ESV
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,
John 1:14 ESV
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Jesus our Emmanuel

Matthew 1:23 ESV
“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).
Emmanuel: God with us not against us
Apart from Christ God is against us, we are under His wrath, we are under condemnation because we remain under the curse of sin = death
the Apostle Paul reminds us of how wonderful it that God should be for us:
Romans 8:31 ESV
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Hail the heav’n born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings,
Ris’n with healing in His wings.
Mild He lays His glory by,
Born that man no more may die;
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.

Hail the heaven born Prince of Peace

One of the titles given to Jesus
Isaiah 9:6–7 ESV
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
who is our Prince of Peace?
Wonderful counselor - knows all things
Mighty God - all powerful
Everlasting Father - this “Father” will never die!
His kingdom will never end - no one will replace him and undo all that He has done

Hail the Sun of righteousness

Quote from Malachi 4:2
Malachi 4:2 ESV
But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall.
Malachi speaking of the great day of the Lord when those who refuse to believe on the Lord Jesus are judged
Those who repent of their evil and believe will experience wonderful blessing
Romans 8:18 ESV
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
1 Corinthians 2:9 ESV
But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”—

Light and life to all He brings

- Quote from Isaiah 9:2 about the coming of the Prince of Peace,
Isaiah 9:2 ESV
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.
what Jesus said of himself
John 14:6 ESV
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 8:12 ESV
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Jesus brings light and life to all who put their faith and trust in him
they alone receive these blessings

Ris’n with healing in His wings

quote from Malachi
Malachi 4:2 ESV
But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall.
the prophecy of Malachi focuses on judgment and blessing
judgment for those who persist in their sinful unbelief
blessing for those who humble themselves before the Lord
Malachi 4:1–2 ESV
“For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall.
heat can melt butter or harden clay, which are you?

Born that man no more may die

Hebrews 9:27 ESV
And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,
Everyone will die once but not everyone twice
The 2nd death is exclusively for those who continue in their unbelief
Revelation 20:14–15 ESV
Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Born to raise the sons of earth, born to give them second birth

why raised and what from?
Ephesians 2:1–3 ESV
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
what is the second birth?
John 3:5–8 ESV
Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
the second birth is the antidote to the second death!
