INTRODUCTION:

1. Many people especially during this time of year wonder...

A. What is God’s will for my life?

1. Can we really know what God wants for us?

B. Can we know the definitive answers to this question?

1. Or dose the bible just vaguely answer?

2. God gives us everything we need to answer this question.

A. All we have to do is turn to His Word.

2 pt 12.-
2 Peter 1:2–4 NKJV
2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

B. I am not going to answer this question for you though because...

1. Many preachers have given the answer and the question still remains.

A. This question must be answered by each and every one of us who desire to be followers of God.

2. You must come to the answer yourself if the answer is going to mean anything.

A. All I will say is that the answer is made available by God in His Word.

John 8:32 NKJV
32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
1. Your job as Christians is to go and find it.
Acts 17:11 NKJV
11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.

3. I will not give you the answer but I will guide you to it with this lesson.

A. You can be the thoroughly equipped complete man of God by understanding.

1. Scripture is from God.

2. Scripture is profitable for doctrine.

3. Scripture is for reproof and correction.

4. Scripture is for instruction in righteousness.

2 Timothy 3:16–17 NKJV
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

BODY:

1. SCRIPTURE IS FROM GOD.

A. This is the first step in understanding what God’s will is for your life.

1. We must give the proper biblical authority to Scripture in our lives.

John 17:17 NKJV
17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

2. If Scripture commands then that is what God desires.

2 Peter 1:16–21 NKJV
16 For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” 18 And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. 19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; 20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
2 Pt

B. All Scripture is from God and He speaks to us through it.

Psalm 119:105 NKJV
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

1. If we desire to know God’s will for our lives we must meditate on His Word.

Psalm 119:14–17 NKJV
14 I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, As much as in all riches. 15 I will meditate on Your precepts, And contemplate Your ways. 16 I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word. 17 Deal bountifully with Your servant, That I may live and keep Your word.
Ps 119.14-
2 Timothy 2:15 NKJV
15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
2 Timothy

2. SCRIPTURE IS PROFITABLE FOR DOCTRINE.

A. This is the second step in understanding what God wills is in your life.

1. We must yield control to God if we are going to understand His will for us.

1 Peter 5:6–7 NKJV
6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
James 4:10 NKJV
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.
1 Pt 5.

2. Often times we overstep our bounds and think I know whats best for us.

Proverbs 14:12 NKJV
12 There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.

B. We are not capable directing our own path.

Jeremiah 10:23 NKJV
23 O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.

1. If we truly desire to know what God wills for us we must understand scripture is profitable for doctrine.

3. SCRIPTURE IS FOR REPROOF AND CORRECTION.

A. This is the third step in understanding what God’s will is in your life.

1. If we are going to understand God’s will for us we must accept correction from God.

Hebrews 12:5–11 NKJV
5 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; 6 For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.” 7 If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? 8 But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. 11 Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
Heb 12.5-9

A. We are going to mess up and the only thing that has the power to correct our error (sin) is the word of God.

Hebrews 4:11–16 NKJV
11 Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. 14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 4:12 NKJV
12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Heb 4

B. Without correction from God how can we know what God wills for our lives?

1 John 1:8–2:6 NKJV
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. 1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. 3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

4. SCRIPTURE IS FOR INSTRUCTION IN RIGHTEOUSNESS.

A. This is the forth and final step in understanding what God’s will is in your life.

1. If we are going to understand God’s will for our lives His book must be our instruction manual for life.

Romans 10:17 NKJV
17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

A. We must refer to His Word for every question as to how to be pleasing to Him.

Galatians 1:6–9 NKJV
6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.

B. We must never go beyond His word to know what he wants for us.

1 Corinthians 4:6 NKJV
6 Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other.

CONCLUSION:

1. If we will follow these four steps...

A. Scripture is from God.

B. Scripture is profitable for doctrine.

C. Scripture is for reproof and correction.

D. Scripture is for instruction in righteousness.

2. We will always know what God wills for our lives.

A. Are you the throughly equipped complete man of God?
